Southern California Quilt Run

You probably know that I love to shop, and love to find new items. I also love to shop with a purpose, and plan on doing some shopping to find items for my  June giveaway.

I've enjoyed participating in various quilt runs.  I have participated in quilt runs in Washington, Colorado and, of course, in California.  Hymm.  Maybe someday I can say I've participated in a quilt run in every U.S. State, but for now,  I'm just excited as a summer butterfly in that the Southern California Quilt Run starts this coming Thursday. And, I'm planning on visiting all the participating shops.   We have a variety of quilt runs in Southern California, but this is the largest, and the one that has the best prizes.

There are 38 shops participating (although somewhere I thought I heard 39).  Each shop has a prize valued at $300 and you are qualified to win that prize, by simply visiting that store and getting your "passport" stamped.  Plus, each store is giving away a free pattern and a free charm to everyone that visits their store during this quilt run!

With so many stores, they've grouped them into four areas where quilters could also win area prizes.  While I'm not sure what all the area prizes are, I know Area 4 is giving away 130 yards of coordinated fabric!  {what a stash builder / dream stash}.  To win an area prize you simply need to visit all the shops in that area to be eligible for the drawing of the area prize.

And, of course, there is a grand prizes.  Eight Grand Prizes:
  • THREE (3) lucky quilters will win a retreat weekend to share with three of their friends (either The ‘Castle’ in Temecula or Inspirations in Big Bear) + a Bernina 210 sewing machine (donated by Bolts in the Bathtub in Lancaster and Cozy Quilt Shop in El Cajon)!
  •  Five (5) lucky quilters will win a Five Hundred Dollar ($500) shopping spree at any or all of the participating quilt shops!
I'm a bit nervous of how to effectively cover all four areas.  And I could certainly use your feedback.  I'm currently planning on starting out on this quilt run this coming Thursday.  I'm sure there are a variety of starting/ending points, but I'm listing the participating shops in the order that I'm thinking of starting & finishing.

If you have any feedback on the order I'm planning, I'd really like to hear your recommendations.  I hope to share insights while I'm out "shopping" this week, but as I'm trying to pack as many shops in as I can, each day, I'm not sure how much time I'll have for internet access...but I'll try to post insights each night.

I'm essentially trying to start this run this Thursday and pack as many stops in as I can each day. With luck I can finish this run in 3 days, but I'm also leaving a 4th day as a backup.  If you are interested in joining me, please let me know ASAP.  Or, if there is a chance we can meet for coffee, lunch, or a few shop visits, I'd love to try to connect with you.  In the meantime, I'm looking for inputs to help me "shop with a purpose".  If you have recommendations, please let me know ASAP.

This is the current order I'm looking at for this quilt run.

Please let me know if you are planning on going on this quilt run, or have been on it in the past and have any recommendations.  I'd also love to hear any recommendations you may have for tips to participating on quilt runs, or what I should be shopping for.  I do so love to shop with a purpose.

Six of us did this one time and spent the night somewhere in Lancaster I think. I can't tell you how tired I was by the time we got to the last couple of shops. You know that internet commercial where they speak random thoughts. Well........ Have fun. You can do it!

Well, my recommendation would be to have your husband drive....you jump out...run in...get a stamp and run back to the car. He can drive as fast as possible without the CHIPS catching you....and "hit" the next shop. Once you see Eleanor and/or Orion...tell them the Tall Red Head wants proof I'm not a cast off child/sibling....and hug them for me....and tell them I said to just give you the darn prize already....LOL.

Good Luck...although you don't need it....or a zillion yards of stash fabric....but if you enjoy everyone you meet....you'll sleep with a smile on your face.

Hugs,
Kelly

Sounds like quite a wide area! I grew up in La Crescenta, near a few of those places, but don't know where most of those are.

There is a Western Washington version coming up the week after that and I'm hoping to visit at least most of the shops.

Have fun!

You are so lucky being able to do this. We don't have anything like that in the UK, and probably don't even have that many quilt shops over the whole country! I'll just be with you in spirit, and if you're hesitating about something I'll encourage you to get it. Does that help at all?

OMG how wonderful (and costly) it would be to live in CA and go on a quilt run. Our quilt shops in UK are few and far between - my LQS is 95 miles away (mind you, in USA I suppose that's not far LOL ) and I only have two other options without needing overnight accommodation! Waiting excitedly for the pictures and reports, oh and the giveaway!! Have fun :)

I am exhausted looking at your schedule! I wish I could join you but I have to work. :( One day I will do the whole run like you are.

I have 2 additions to your run. These are new shops that aren't allowed on the run yet but they are worth the slight detour.

I was in SoCal last month & stopped by Luella's Quilt Basket where I picked up the brochure about the run! After seeing that map, I didn't think anyone could possibly do the whole thing! Good luck & take plenty of money for gas! And watch out for those CHIPS guys! I got a speeding ticket because I kept trying to avoid being rear-ended by all the tailgaters in the Car Pool lane! lol have fun!

That tires me out just thinking about that many shops. I live near Calico Horse and I love Quilters Coop and Fat Quarters. Have fun!

OK, #3 is way out of oder as your 4th stop, but I see that you've also listed it below, in the logical place. The rest looks pretty darn good. Have a great time, I hope you're planning on spending the night in the hither-land, some where. I think I'll shoot for this next year.

I have a friend who usually makes the run, she goes with a group, one drives and they all jump out and limit their time at each shop. I know they have it planned like you and stay the night in certain locations, they get up and drive again the next day. By the time they are done they're exhausted. I hope you have a great time, I would love to do this someday. How fun that the shops give out patterns and goodies.
