Fun Friday Giveaway: Cherry Blossoms Quilting Studio

Cherry is a wonderful "Southern Woman" who is also a very talented quilter, longarmer, and quilt designer.
She has a wonderful blog where she shares many tips, fun insights. As a follower of her blog, I knew when I saw her beautiful Christmas Tree Quilt (Feathered Christmas ) that she shared in the 2011 Christmas Quilt Show, that this wonderful quilt needed to become a published design.
Needless to say, I was absolute delighted when I learned Cherry published this "Feathered Christmas" pattern. The finished wallhanging measures 24"x28" and uses a raw edge applique with pieced borders. It looks great in red/white, blue/white and I'm confident it would look spectacular in batiks, as well as a variety of colors and prints.

The finished wallhanging measures 28"x28" and uses a raw edge applique with pieced borders.
Both Feathered Christmas and Feather Fancy patterns are easy to follow with excellent visuals. They also come with a full size layout template that helps with placement of the raw-edge applique' pieces. While you can manually cut these applique shapes, these designs are AccuQuilt GO! compatible using the following dies: 55028, 55087, 55088, 55024, 55017, and 55053. To clarify, these patterns include everything you need to create this design without the use of an AccuQuilt, or all of these dies, but using the GO! and all of dies certainly helps to make this a very fast and fun project!
I was delighted how easy and fun the Feathered Christmas design came together. I'm certainly looking forward to quilting it, and also making Feather Fancy too.

200 Blocks from Quiltmaker Magazine
SewCalGal is always looking for good tools for quilters, especially when they help to create beautiful quilts and other projects. As many quilters enjoy incorporating interesting blocks into their projects, and many have enjoyed the 100 Block Challenges, by Quiltmaker Magazine, I was delighted to learn of the new book "200 Blocks from Quiltmaker Magazine: Original Patterns from Today's Top Designers". And, I'm delighted to be able to share insights with you today about this book.
This book was created by Quiltmaker magazine, from their 100 block challenges, and published by Martingale/That Patchwork Place.
The block designs in this book are displayed in full color and each block shows designer name and website, along with instructions for you to make the block.
The book also includes a "bonus CD", which includes full-sized appliqué and foundation-piecing patterns that you can print as needed. All blocks finish at 12".
Block designs range from simple patchwork to applique, foundation piecing, hand embroidery, and even include some yo-yos. There is also a section that shares insights on block settings, as well as a great block index that is very user-friendly.

Sarah Vedeler Teaching at Cozy Quilt Shop - Amazing Quilting & Embroidery Opportunities
Sarah Vedeler is an amazing designer, quilter, teacher, and a true master machine embroidery artist. She is well known for GO! Be Dazzled quilt that was awarded 1st place in the Computer Aided Machine Embroidery category of the International Quilt Association World of Beauty Annual Judged Show in Houston, TX in November 2010.
Many also know Sarah for her spectacular quilts and other projects that can be made using her Hearts ME CD designs, Heather Feather ME designs, as well as the Sparkle ME designs.
You may know Sarah for her spectacular use of color, or it might be that you are familiar with her amazing free-motion quilting style.
Southern California is fortunate to be having a very mild winter, and our winter is even getting better. Yes, Sarah Vedeler is coming to teach at Cozy Quilt Shop February 21st & 22nd of which you are invited too!
On Monday., February 21st Sarah will be teaching a Stars Embroidered Applique Class from 10am-4pm.
This ME design set can work with fabrics cut the old fashioned way, but AccQuilt GO! has a great collection of dies that really make applique ME so much easier.
Cozy Quilt Shop will also have a GO! and these Star dies available for use at this class. And the stars ME design pack is on sale (both in the shop and on line). If you do not live in the area, remember we are having such great weather that this could be a wonderful opportunity to come for a class and stay for a few days to enjoy our warm winter! May 2011 bring you kind words of encouragement and support
I do wish you a happy and healthy New Year. And I wish for everyone to give and receive more words of encouragement and support to all quilting, sewing and embroidery enthusiasts. Well, actually, more kind words and support for everyone!
I'd like to see that budding designer in you blossom as I know you can design and create beautiful projects. I'd like to see you write and publish a pattern or book, as I've seen your ideas and I know you can capture your ideas in writing and inspire others. You are very talented and have a gift that I want to see grow and shared with others.
Don't listen to that person that looks at your project and doesn't say "Brilliant" or other kind words. Those people that instantly say, "I don't like those colors" or something else non-supportive can have their words trucked off to the dump. We don't need to hear negative words that shut down the spirit of creativity. We need a world filled with encouraging and supportive words like "spectacular", "excellent", "lovely", "great job" and so many others.
We need encouraging words and support and we need to create a world that provides this to others. This is my wish for you in 2011 and I hope you will help make it happen.
When you look at a quilt, sewn garment, or embroidery project in the future I hope you will look for something positive and share some encouragement and kind words with the creator. When you see a pattern or book I hope you will take time to find something to compliment the author. These people took time to create, to give from their heart and inner spirit and to share with us.
Gifts back to the quilting world can take many forms. A great example is that of Wayne Kollinger who is the author of "Designing Quilts is Easy". While I've not had a chance to read this book, I enjoy reading Wayne's Blog and I admire his talents and appreciate his willingness to continually give back to the quilting community. He also wrote "How I gave birth to a Book" which has wonderful insights to inspire and help those future authors.
Wayne is always looking for ways to inspire others. He also Wayne is also interested in sharing the story of designers on his blog. You can email Wayne and share insights on why you design and he'll post about it on his blog. I do respect and admire Wayne for his on-going contributions to our world of quilting and all his kind words and encouragement he is always willing to share with others. And his post today shares inspirational insights on why he designs. I hope you'll check it out.
You can design with many tools. Some great designers doodle on paper and create beautiful projects. I doodle with EQ7. For me, EQ7 enables me to dream, to create, to play and to learn. Everytime I play in EQ7 I learn more about this robust tool, but EQ isn't about the tool it is about creating, about designing.
What ever tools you use, I hope you enjoy creating and designing in 2011. And I hope you receive encouraging words and support for all your projects, as well as you look for opportunities to encourage and support others.

Robin Quilts, etc. of Two Wacky Women
I recently hosted a sew-cial on Mission Bay, and was delighted to have Robin Gallagher and Marilyn Pond, of Two Wacky Woman, come spend the day with me. Both of these ladies are delightful and very talented. While I plan to share more about Two Wacky Woman in the future, I wanted to focus today on sharing insights about Robin's designs.
Robin came to this sew-cial bringing along an amazing Trunk Show of her designs. And she kindly approved me sharing them with you.
Robin's quilt designs are really beautiful.
{above} Robin's Magical Slice & Dice quilt is truly spectacular. This photo doesn't do this quilt justice. It is a beautiful quilt that just radiates fun and excitement.
Robin has several really cute bags & tote designs.
I have found Robin's Letty's Bag and Letty's Little Bag patterns to be well written, with excellent visuals, making these patterns very easy for someone that is new to making bags & totes, as well as creating a fun design for those that are more advanced. I also enjoyed seeing various ways that the strap can be routed thru the grommets, creating a completely different look.
Robin also has some really fun stuff patterns too!
And, Robin loves to teach classes as well as share her trunk show and give presentations at quilt guilds, quilt shops, etc.. You can contact her directly for more information if you'd like to have her come to your quilt guild. And if you'd like her to come teach a class at your local quilt shop, be sure to let them know.
Robin also has some great tutorials, including a video that helps you install purse grommets.

{above} Magnolia Lane is such a fun quilt design that would look great in just about any fabric combination.
{above} "East Meets West "69"x83" is a great quilt design that really shows off the novelty/focus fabric in the center blocks and in the border. Instructions are well written and easy to follow, making this a perfect quilt for all levels (beg to advanced).
{above} I really enjoyed seeing the 'Wacky Devine Nine" design made up in cute Halloween fabrics. Can you see the nine patch blocks in this quilt? This pattern is well written and perfect for all skill levels. It is a fast quilt that really creates a fun wacky feeling to make a fun quilt, perfect for any color combination!

Electric Quilt Blog
I love reading blogs that share insights and inspire. In this post I want to share insight about the Electric Quilt's Blog, as well as some tips on tools to help follow blogs.
EQ has a wonderful blog, that I believe is a great source of information that is perfect for anyone interested in Electric Quilt products, as well as anyone interested in learning about quilt designers, events, and more. Clearly, there is more happening on this blog than sharing insights on EQ products. For example:
Did you know that the talented quilt and machine embroidery designer, Sarah Vedeler, uses EQ to design her brilliant quilts? I so enjoyed the post on the EQ blog about Sarah.
Lacey J. Hill is a talented designer and quilter, whom I also enjoyed reading about in the EQ Blog.
I also learned about Michele Scott, from the EQ Blog. Michele is a talented multi-published quilt designer.
Then, there are great insights on EQ7 via the EQ blog. I was very excited to learn that EQ has a new video about the EQ7 Image Worktable. And, while I've played with this feature, I was inspired by this post and this amazing video that was shared on the EQ blog.
I could give a variety of more examples about why I enjoy following the EQ blog. I hope you'll pop over to visit this blog, and that you'll decide it is a great blog to follow too.
While I'm sharing insights about following blogs, I also want to mention how much I enjoy Google Reader. There are many that are new to following blogs, and probably more familiar with saving sites they visit to their Favorites. While the Favorites utility is handy for saving links to sites that we like to visit, it doesn't let us know if a blog site has been updated or not. With respect to following blogs, Google Reader is a big step above the Favorites utility, as it allows you to track blogs that you want to follow and easily identify if a blog has been updated or not. Thus, you don't click to visit a blog to find it hasn't been updated. While I'll share more about Google Reader in the near future, a quickie overview follows:
1. Go to www.google.com/reader
2. Click the button "Add Subscription" and type in the web address for any blog that you want to follow. For example:
