Can a BOM Be Plain And Fancy?

SewCalGal struggles with how a BOM can be Plain and Fancy. It is easy to imagine a plain BOM, as well as a fancy BOM, but how can a single BOM be both?

To my delight and surprise I learned that a BOM can in fact be both "Plain and Fancy".  After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  And, with this BOM when you look at it closely you can see how one might think it truly is a Plain and Fancy BOM.

The very talented Wendy Sheppard (Ivory Spring) designed a beautiful quilt called "Plain and Fancy" using  new lines of fabric from Quilting Treasures, called Petals (calicos) and Matrix (blenders).

This is a BOM program that many quilt shops are offering.  If you are interested in this BOM program and your favorite local quilt shop or online shop isn't offering it, you may want to let them know you are interested. There is still plenty of time for them to sign up with Quilting Treasures to offer this BOM program to their customers.  You can click here for a list of quilt shops participating in this BO and contact them directly to let them know you are interested.

SewCalGal had the opportunity to see this quilt up close and personal, inside the Quilting Treasures booth at Quilt Market.  It is truly a spectacular quilt.  Gorgeous design and fabrics.

This BOM certainly looks like it would be a fun one to participate in.  And, I think those that do participate will be making a spectacular heirloom quilt that will be enjoyed for generous.  I hope you also enjoy this BOM!

The 7th BOM - Going To Make A Big Impact!

Sometimes one BOM just isn't enough.  Yes, you may need to make a lot of BOMs to create an impact. Beware that one can easily become addicted to making BOMS.  Yes, some quilters sign up for multiple BOMs at the same time.  Some designers make a lot of BOMs in a lifetime. There are BOMs that you get the picture of what is going to happen up front, then there are BOMs that are a complete Mystery.   Clearly, there are not any specific guidelines for making multiple BOMs you just need to follow the design for each specific BOM and everything literally falls into place!

SewCalGal is delighted to be able to share insights with you today about a 2014  BOM program that has just been announced and open for registration.  The BOM doesn't officially start until June 2014, when the fabric is released by Moda!

This BOM is one that comes with monthly kits of fabric that will be released in June and it is going to be a Designer Mystery Quilt BOM offered through the Fat Quarter Shop!  And, this amazing BOM is the 7th Annual BOM program offered by the Fat Quarter Shop too.  Woo hoo!  That is 7 years of fun BOM making for FQS.

I'll confess I've been drooling over sneak peak photos, so I thought I'd show you the fabrics.

Snowbird is a new line of fabric designed by Edyta Sitar (Laundry Basket Quilts) and will be available in June 2014, in two different lines:  Snowbird Prints or Snowbird Batiks.

While yardage will be available at Fat Quarter Fabrics for the entire Snowbird fabric line, you'll also be able to order it in Fat Quarter bundles,Strip Bundles,  as well as Charm Packs.

But the exciting news is Edyta Sitar has designed a Mystery BOM using these fabrics and this will be the 7th Annual BOM hosted by the Fat Quarter Shop.

You can reserve your spot for this 2014 Designer Mystery BOM Program with the Fat Quarter Shop for $4.95 by clicking here.

You also have several options as you can sign up to participate in the Mystery BOM, and you can also opt in to ordering the backing set or the finishing kit.

To clarify, the Fat Quarter Shop will be selling this fabric in June.  You'll be able to purchase yardage and fat quarter bundles to use as you wish, or you can sign up for this super fun Designer Mystery BOM which will use the Snowbird fabrics when you make the mystery bom.  And you know with this gorgeous fabric your mystery quilt is going to be stunning.

This is going to be a super exciting BOM to participate in this year!  It will definitely make a big impact if you make this quilt for your home, or for a gift.

Keep An Eye Out For BOMs In 2014

First, SewCalGal wants to advise that there are times when you simply don't talk about BOMs:

  • Riding in an Elevator
  • Standing in line at the Superbowl
  • Passing thru TSA security at the airport

And, there are definitely times when one should talk about BOMs:
  • When you see a beautiful BOM program, one should definitely share this opportunity with quilty friends.
  • When you are chatting with a new quilter that is learning, as BOM program can be an excellent way to learn!
  • When you hear of a FREE BOM program

One thing that is troubling SewCalGal that you may be able to help with.  Why is it that Quilters are so familiar with BOMs, but in wikipedia it isn't referenced?  We need to fix this in 2014!

There are some amazing BOM programs that are being launched in 2014 and SewCalGal wants to heighten awareness with you on some of these programs, over the next few weeks.  (far too many insights to share in one post.

While many BOM programs are designed to work with specific fabric lines, they frequently will work with fabric in your stash.  You simply need to do a bit more planning, or consider buying supplemental fabrics to use with your stash.

Some BOM programs require you to pay for the entire year in advance, some you pay a monthly fee. And, some are FREE!

BOM programs can also offer the opportunity to not make a project, but just follow along to learn a technique: color, free-motion quilting, precision piecing, and other techniques.

CRAFTSY has a 2014 BOM program that is completely free!  It is taught by Amy Walsh and Janine Burke.

It will help quilters learn about color, contrast and more!

This class is sponsored by Michael Miller Fabrics.  Kits are available in the Craftsy store if you wish to purchase the fabrics showcased in this BOM, which are absolutely beautiful.  But again, you can also participate in this free BOM program and use fabrics from your stash, buy other fabrics, or watch and learn without making the BOM design provided.  It is up to you. And, like other Craftsy classes you can take this class at your leisure.

Don't forget to keep an eye out for BOMs in 2014.  There are quite a few spectacular BOMs this year.  And, I'll be sharing insights about many that have caught my attention soon.
