It has been quite some time since I've held a Guess the Designer challenge.  For those that may not be aware of what this is, let me start with a little explanation:

Guess the Designer Challenge - Part 1 & Part 2

PART I of II  

How good are you at recognizing designer patterns, styles, fabrics, and works by famous people, etc? If you have been a follower of my blog, for awhile, you probably know I've been trying to build my skills in being able to recognize designers by their work (and ultimately the work of their students).
In part one of these Guess the Designer Challenge posts, I share photos of projects made by the designer that I'm showcasing in this challenge. Your challenge is to see if you can look at the collection of photos I share and correctly guess who the designer is.

The first person to correctly guess the designer will be recognized in part two of this post, as well as be recognized on Designer Challenge Page of my blog.

I may add more clues (photos, insights) to this post, every couple of hours, if no one correctly guesses the designer.  So, check back. 

PART II   

Who Guessed it: Rafael's Mum

Who is this designer:  Bari J. Ackerman (Bari J.)

My attention was drawn to Bari J. when she was nominated to the Golden Quilter Awards.  As she hadn't previously been on my radar, I used that nomination as a trigger for me to take time to investigate and learn more about Bari J.  She is a designer that debuted her line of handbags and accessories in 2004.  In 2009, she began to introduce fabric and sewing patterns.  And, in January 2011 she introduced her first book "Inspired to Sew", which is a wonderful book, that I'll share more insights about in the near future.

You may already be aware that Bari J. is a very talented person.  She has designed various lines of fabric, including the very popular line "Paris Apartment" with Lecien Fabrics.  She even created a very cute free pattern for this fabric line too.



Bari J. worked with SLICE to create a memory card that cuts beautiful applique' pieces for the Paris Apartment theme.


There are a number of very cute designs that are included on this memory card.

And, these applique' pieces help you make beautiful quilts, wallhangings, table runners, embellishing, clothing, and even make very cute pillows. 



Fairly recently, I also attended a class with Bari J. through RickRack Thread Therapy for Sewers, which is part of the Virtue Radio Network.  While I'll share more about this in a future post, this class was wonderful.  Bari J. is an excellent teacher and RickRack's virtual class structure was one of the best I've ever seen.  If you ever have a chance to take a course through RickRack and/or Bari J. definitely take it.  You'll have a blast and learn a lot!


Very recently, Bari J. started a wonderful blog called "We Love French Knots" which is dedicated to modern embroidery.

Guess the Designer Challenge Part 1 & Part 2

Who Guessed it: Pamela Davis of Creative Dawnz Dolz

Who is this designer:  Karen Brow's Java House Quilts

About this designer:

Karen Brow, of Java House Quilts, has a whimsical style with many of her delightful designs having playful animals.  Thus, I picked the photo of her cute "Tableworks for Fall" tablerunner pattern, to see if I could stump everyone.  I was impressed that Pamela Davis instantly recognized Karen Brow's designs.  Pamela certainly knows her designers!

Did you know Karen just released her new pattern "Muchas Poochas"?  This design just makes me want to smile.

I also love her new design "We Bearly Made It".

Her "Reader Keepers" is also a new pattern that I love.  Looks like a perfect case for e:readers or special books.  Definitely would make an excellent gift too. 
And she has many more wonderful patterns on her site and also accepts wholesale orders too.  Just let your local quilt shop know you'd like them to carry patterns from Java House Quilts, if you do not find them.


Karen is a talented designer that has been sewing since she was about 14 years old.  She graduated from Michigan State University and worked as a Graphics Designer and Cartoon Illustrator before she began focusing her energies on design beautiful whimsical quilt designs.

Who Guessed it: Creative Busy Hands   (aka Luiza).
Who is this designer:  Sandra Leichner

About this designer:
Sandra designed and made this beautiful quilt called "Afternoon Tea With Miss D".  It won the viewers choice award at Road to California 2011.  And it took a 2nd place award from the judges in the Category of Traditional Wall Mixed.

The theme of this quilt is "Celebrating a friendhip and our common love of girly tea time things".

The design and detailed workmanship on this quilt is spectacular.

Sandra will also be teaching at Asilomar in 2011 and Road to California in 2012.  She currently likes to teach workshops, over several days.  She is also an author of "Hand Applique with Embroidery" and has also designed many patterns.  She is from Albany, Oregon.

Sandra is also a nominee for the 2011 Golden Quilter Awards.

Designer Challenge Part 1 and Part 2

Are you good at recognizing designers' by their work?  If you have been a follower of SewCalGal, you may know that I periodically post a challenge where I start off providing a clue and see who can be the first to guess who the designer is.  If no one correctly guesses in a reasonable time, I add another clue.  

The first person to correctly guess the designer gets the fame by being recognized on the "Designer Challenge page on my blog.  And all the participants get the opportunity to become more familiar with designers. I had a personal goal of being able to recognize designers by their work and decided to periodically hold this challenge on my blog.  I hope you'll give it a try and enjoy learning too!

Part One of this challenge is my posting photos are insights about the designer in this challenge. Today, I will give a clue that this designer is well known for their expertise with Electric Quilt.

Part Two

Who Guessed this Designer:  The person that was the first to correctly guess this designer is Gene Black (Art by Gene). 

Who is this Designer:  Angie Padilla's designs are found on "Angie's Bits and Pieces".  She has many wonderful designs and I think her Bloomin Hearts would be beautiful for Valentine's Day, or any time of the year.

Angie lives in Quito, Equador.  She has an excellent eye for color and design and creates a large variety of designs that are all spectacular.  Typically, you can buy her patterns from her online store and receive in EQ6 format or PDF format.  Or you can obtain a yearly membership, where you have unlimited access to her designs and more membership benefits too.

I am extremely fond of the book "EQ6 Applique' Drawing", written by Angie.  While written for EQ6, this book definitely benefits EQ7 users too.  It is well written and has fun exercises that help you build your expertise with EQ's applique' features and more.  Also, this book is currently on sale via the Electric Quilt website for 50% off while supplies last.  And there is a free lesson, from this book, that is also available online.

Guess the Designer Challenge Part 1 & Part 2

It has been a long time since I've held a Guess the Designer Challenge.  So, I feel like I should clarify how these work....

As one of my goals has been to increase my ability of recognizing designers by their quilting designs and styles, as well as research and learn about more designers, I thought it would be fun to hold a two part challenge where a photo(s) is posted and you get a chance to guess who the designer is.  When the correct guess is placed this post is updated (Part 2) sharing more insight about this designer.  And, the person that correctly guessed the designer gets recognized on the Guess the Designer Challenge page of my blog too!

So here is a photo of part of a quilt.  Can  you correctly guess the name of this designer?

Part Two

Greg Bryson (Flat Out Quilting) was the first to correctly guess this designer, based on the snippet of a photo of a quilt.  Greg is also now listed in the "Designer Challenge" page (aka Hall of Fame for being able to correctly guess designers by photos of their quilts).

This designer is the very talented Sarah Vedeler.  Sarah designed and  made this spectacular GO! Be Dazzeled Quilt. 



















This quilt also recently won First Place, at the International Quilt Festival Houston, in the Computer-Aided Machine Embroidery category of the 2010 “A World of Beauty”. This was the first time Sarah has entered a quilt in the IQA show. Congratulations to Sarah Vedeler!

Designer Challenge Part 1 & 2

For this particular challenge, I think it may be difficult.  I only learned of this designer via  the nominations for the Golden Quilter Awards.  To clarify, this designer was a nominee for the Golden Quilter Awards in 2010.  Ok.  Here are a few more clues......this talented designer is also going to be teaching at IQF Long Beach next week, and they also use Electric Quilt products to create their amazing designs.  I hope these clues are helpful!  Good luck.

Who is this designer: Deb Karasik

Deb is clearly an amazing designer.  I understand she also  uses Electric Quilt products (now EQ7) to design her beautiful quilts, using perfect paper piecing techniques.

Check out her site for more information for workshop opportunities. I think she'd be awesome for teaching to a guild,  a quilt store, but I think you'll soon only be able to take her workshops thru large quilt shows. She is very talented and definitely destined to inspire and teach quilters who want to make spectacular quilts. 

Deb has also written 'Quilts With Attitude',  published by AQS, and is currently working on her next book.  I can't wait to check out Quilts With Attitude, and I am already looking forward to Deb's next book.  She is so very talented and inspirational!

Who guessed it:  Vicki Cal (Felines and Fibre Arts).  And Vicki lives in Ontario Canda and she was the first to correctly guess this Designer, who is from California.  Vicki certainly knows her designers!  Congratulations Vicki!

Who is this designer:  Norah McMeeking (Bella Bella Quilts) who is an amazing quilter, designer, teacher, and author!   I've been lucky to take two different workshops with her and learned alot in both.  I wouldn't hesitate to sign up to take another class with Norah.  She really is an excellent teacher who inspires and helps ensure quilters of all levels, sharing a common class, all learn and come away from the class inspired to make more amazing quilts.  She also has the ability to take complex designs and make them easy to make. 

Norah has written "Bella Bella quilts", which was published by CT Publishing.  This is an excellent book for making her signature designs of beautiful Italian Mosaic quilts.

She also travels whereby she gives delightful lectures and/or holds fun workshops, which I highly recommend for any quilt guild, store, or show looking for an amazingly talented designer who does an excellent job inspiring thru her lectures, as well as teaching in her workshops!  And while she is well known for her Bella Bella (italian mosaic designs) she has a broad selection of designs to teach and inspire, and an excellent trunk show to share!

Who is this designer:  Patrick Lose

One of my personal objectives of blogging was to be able to broaden my insights. While I was familiar with Patrick Lose, long before I started blogging, thru my research for this blog I have become more familiar with Patrick Lose, and definitely fallen more in love with his whimsical and cheerful designs. 

Patrick Lose was also received a nomination in the Golden Quilter Awards for Best Designer, which shows he is recognized and loved by many quilters!  He has also written many wonderful quilt books, including "A Patrick Lose Christmas",  "Poster Quilts with Patrick Lose", "Terrific Table Toppers" and many more published by CT Publishing.
