PatternSpot Downloadable Pattern Marketplace

CT Publishing has launched a new site called PatternSpot, where designers can can upload their designs, in PDF format, and quilting and sewing enthusiasts can shop from home, at their leisure with 24/7 online access to patterns you can easily download.  There are even free patterns and the list of designers that belong to PatternSpot is growing, along with the selection of designs.

Designers can create free accounts to upload and sell their patterns in PDF format and retain the ability to sell their patterns elsewhere. They set the price for their patterns, upload a single cover image, and text that will appear on the PatternSpot website. There is a one time fee of $.50 to list each pattern for sale on PatternSpot and PatternSpot will retain 45% of the sale of each pattern. Visit the PatternSpot site for more information.
There is a large list of Designers that have uploaded designs to PatternSpot. Some that caught my attention are: Becky Goldsmith, Chatterbox Quilts, Margaret Bucklew, Emily Cier, Geta, Sis Boom, Laura Wasilowski, and more.
Patterns are organized in groups for quilting, sewing, and garment patterns and it is pretty easy to navigate Pattern Spot in a variety of ways.
The site is new and they are still working on a few minor issues.  I found that some pattern images do not load in a timely manner, or will not load at all.  You also have to scroll down the page to see all the designs on that page, but then you have to scroll back up to get to the next page.  It also appears to allow the designer to upload one photo per design, which isn't always a great way to inspire a customer to buy.  E.G. should designers upload an image of the pattern, the completed project, etc.  My preference would be to have the ability to have 3-5 photos per design uploaded, with a minimum of one photo per design. And, when you sort thru the list of patterns some patterns appear on every page, which becomes a bit annoying.
I have not seen any actual patterns from this site, but it does not appear that PatternSpot requires any pre-testing, thus when you purchase the integrity of the pattern is based on the reputation of the Designer.
PatternSpot has a lot of potential, with the ability of helping designers promote awareness of their patterns, as well as making it easy for customers to shop and buy patterns.  I'm excited about PatternSpot and hope you'll check it out too.
There are several cute designs and more being added all the time.  Here are a few that caught my attention:
Fancy Feathered Star, by Annis Clapp
Diamond Bouquet, by Chasing Cottons
Triangle Quilt, by Geta

My overall impressions, is that PatternSpot is going to be a great place for Designers to sell patterns and Quilters to shop.  The kinks in a new online store are being worked out and I'm sure the team working on PatternSpot will get them resolved very soon.  While you may wonder why I'm sharing this with you now, I want to share that I think this site is one that is worthy of having on your radar, and for Designers to sign up soon.

Information on common FAQ on PatternSpot can be found at their site.

Blog Problems

I'd prefer to share insights about quilting, sewing and/or embroidery today, but Blogger/Google problems are creating havoc in blogland.

And I felt there are some insights that are appropriate to share for non-bloggers and bloggers.

For Non-Bloggers:
These problems may be evident to you as you attempt to leave a comment on various blogs and find yourself in an endless loop.  If your comment goes thru, you may want to look closely as many of these comments are getting posted on various blogs as a no-reply or anonymous comment, even when you have a valid Google Account.  This may not be an issue for many comments, but it definitely is an issue when you enter a giveaway and if you really want to leave a comment on a blog post.

I am currently hosting a giveaway on my blog, sponsored by Angie Padilla, for "My Dream House" software.  As many entries to this giveaway are coming thru without contact info, even though I suspect they are associated with those that have valid Google accounts, I'm planning on extending out this contest.  The new final date is TBD, but if you have entered this giveaway you may want to go leave another comment and be sure to include your contact info as it may not come thru with your Google account.

For Everyone (Non-Bloggers and Bloggers):
While Blogger is working on this problem, they have recommended that everyone take time to delete their cookies and clear their cache.  For some cases this seams to resolve the problems.  It also appears that using FireFox, which I recently started using, resolves many issues.  I'm actually finding when I have a problem in IE and switch to FireFox the problem goes away.  Yet, oddly, when I have a problem in FireFox when I switch back to IE it works.

For Bloggers:
I recently received insights from Nancy (Tattered Garden), that Blogger does have a feature that allows you to backup your blog via an export feature. And we all know how important it is to back up data!  In Blogger, you simply go to your "Settings" and you will find an option that will allow you to Export your blog (or import).

If anyone has experience with the export feature for backup and using it for a recovery, or using it to import to a different blogging tool (e.g. typepad, etc.) I'd really like to hear your perspective on your experiences with these phases of the backup tool. For example, what went well what didn't, etc.

If you would like to get more information on the Blogger/Google issues for this latest problem, you may want to visit this link: http://tinyurl.com/3gpmqn3  I also want to encourage you to leave a comment, with a link to your blog or any blog you've had problems with, so that Blogger gets a better perspective on how broad this issue is.

Lastly, I wish I could share something more fun with you.  I really do have some interesting insights, as well as sponsored giveaways, but this Blogger/Google issue is one that I felt needed to be shared.  And, I'm also hoping some of you may also have more insights that will help on this "painful" experience with blogger.

Quilters of the Caribbean Contest

Photobucket

AccuQuilt, HandiQuilter and Golden Threads are sponsoring the Quilters of the Caribbean contest.

If you are not yet on Facebook, this is another great example of what fun you are missing.  It is truly easy to sign up and create your own Facebook account for free.  If you have been avoiding Facebook, consider using it just for quilting fun, as there is a lot of fun and inspiration on Facebook for quilters.

Ok, I'll get back to this contest.  You simply need to sail the seas on Facebook and follow the map for the gold (amazing prizes for quilters).
Photobucket

On your adventure, you'll visit Golden Threads SpringHandiQuilter's Cove, and AccuQuilt Cove.  At each of these places, there will be clues for more info (e.g.  you'll find a link labeled "Quilters of the Caribbean" where you'll find a secret code).   Once you find all three codes you'll click on the "X" on the chart for the gold and you'll be magically taken to a place where you'll enter your codes that are required to officially enter the contest.  Very fun and easy.  And, you could win a fantastic prize:

Winners of this contest will be emailed on May 31st.

Yo Ho, Yo Ho, its a Quilters Life for Me!
Photobucket

If you are not yet a Facebook member does this get you motivated to join fellow quilters on Facebook?  Yes, good.  I hope you'll like me on Facebook too.  And, if you are still thinking  you don't want to join Facebook, I'll leak this secret:  AccuQuilt will have another fun contest next month, with yummy prizes too!  How many opportunities to win great prizes and have fun with fellow quilters are you willing to give up?  Gosh, every Friday they have a great giveaway for their fans on Facebook (e.g. a GO! Baby has been given away every Friday).

If you are already a quilter that is on Facebook, and have other recommendations as to why Quilters should join Facebook and/or join AccuQuilt on Facebook, I hope you'll leave a comment and share your insights.  Gosh, there must be at least 100,000 quilters out there that are missing a lot of fun by not being on Facebook (and liking AccuQuilt on Facebook).

If you know of any quilters that are not on Facebook, I hope you'll let them knw about all the fun they are missing.

501 Quilting Motifs Designs For Hand Or Machine Quilting

I'm always looking for ideas for new free-motion quilting designs and was excited when I heard about the new book "501 Quilting Motifs, Designs for Hand or Machine Quilting", by Martingale & Company, home of That Patchwork Place.

After having a chance to check out this quilt book, I wanted to share insights with you today.  This book was compiled by Quiltmaker Magazine, over a 26 period, and contains 501 quilting motifs that are perfect for machine quilters, hand quilters and/or longarm quilters.

The collect of designs  include a variety of quilt designs organized into groups by Children/Teens, Feathers, Flowers, Foods, Geometric Shapes, Hearts, Seasonal/Holiday, Vines and Leaves, and Circle and Angle Patterns.
The book is also  spiral bound making it easy to copy and/or trace designs.

Insights are also shared, in this book, to help with motif selection, adjusting size, transferring motifs, positioning, marking and more.

I hope you'll have a chance to check out this book at your local quilt store, or online at Martingale & Company.

Survey Feedback Wanted

I am testing the waters with online survey tools for possible use in the 2012 Golden Quilter Awards.  As I've also been doing some research on irons, I'm wanting to try out this survey tool and also try to gather insight on your experience with irons.  As such, I hope you will take a few minutes to complete this confidential survey for me.

You may question why such a survey asks for contact information.  This is really to help test for the Golden Quilter Awards, where I need contact info in order to award prizes for the respective giveaway.  Thus, I hope you'll complete this portion of this survey, and as many portions as you feel appropriate.

Thank you!

Do you have plans to celebrate Memorial Day ? Consider Helping to Make Quilts for QOV - One Block at a Time

Do you have plans for Memorial Day weekend?  Are you having a traditional BBQ, watching a parade, or having a relaxing weekend enjoying family & friends?  What ever you do, I hope you have a wonderful time.  But, if you are able to, I'm hoping you willt consider making a Patriotic block, or more, to help the Quilts of Valor program give quilts to wounded Soldiers and Veterans.

You can always make quilt blocks, quilt tops or finished quilts and give to your local QOV progam.  But, between now and June 20th you have the opportunity to help QOV and also enter my first Charity Quilt Block Challenge, sponsored by AccuQuilt, Quilt in a Day, and Martingale & Company.  They've donated some great prizes that you could win on July 4th, just by helping to make quilts for QOV.

Beautiful Quilt blocks are starting to arrive and  Tink Linhart has been kind enough to send me some photos to share with you today.  I'll later do another post, where I hope to recognize everyone that has sent in blocks.  Unfortunately, I don't yet have all the info to recognize exactly who created which block shared today.  But, for those that are taking this Challenge, please know how much you are appreciated.

Maybe you have time today to make a Patriotic quilt block, or sometime this week, but I wanted to plant a seed to encourage quilters to make one, or more, over Memorial Day weekend.

Please take time to read SewCalGal's Charity Quilt Block Challenge for more informaiton on this challenge, and how to enter to win prizes.

Some of you may be wondering how I selected Dick & Tink's group to be the recipient of my first Charity Quilt Block Challenge.  Well, it is pretty simple as they were the first to respond when I posted an announcement that I was looking for non-profit groups that would be interested in being recipient of such challenges in the future, and they have a large volunteer base that is committed to finishing these quilts.  If there is interest in future Challenges, I hope to be able to coordinate more to benefit other non-profit charity quilt groups.

Sponsored Giveaway by Angie's Bits & Pieces

I am honored to announce that Angie Padilla is sponsoring a giveaway to celebrate a new shopping site for her lovely patterns.  For those that may not be familiar with Angie, I want to share a few insights with you before I talk about her new site, or this giveaway.

Angie Padilla is a very talented quilt designer and author, born in the USA and now living in  Quito, Ecuador.  Her talents include excellent drawing skills, and she has shared all of her talents with quilters around the world, through her book "EQ6 Applique Drawing".  This is an excellent companion book for any EQ6 or EQ7 user that would like to build their skills on creating Applique' designs.  I truly love this book.  And, I also want to share that The Electric Quilt Company currently has this book on sale for 50% off, while supply lasts.
Photobucket
Angie also used her talents and worked with The Electric Quilt Company to create the "My Dream House Software", which is a delightful add-on software package that is compatible with EQ5, EQ6 and EQ7.  I have seen several award winning quilts, all unique, created by using this software.
Photobucket
Here is a picture of Angie's quilt that inspired the "My Dream House" project. You can view Angie's quilt entered in the Blogger's Quilt Festival for more details on this amazing quilt.  It is a great example of what you can create with this software.

I am a new user of My Dream House, but love it.  It is very easy to use and one which I'm looking forward to using to create applique' quilt designs, wallhangings, pillows, tote bags, greeting cards and, of course, images for blogging. Yeap, maybe some help wanted signs?

Yes, this software is packed with a variety of imaginative furnishings for your home and ways to have fun and create entertaining designs.

The CD contains:
  • 15 dolls
  • 32 quilts
  • 127 blocks
  • 282 motifs
  • EQ5 and EQ6 projects
  • My Dream House Block Library
  • BONUS Children's Doll House project on PDF.
There are even seasonal decorations.  You'll even find blank houses that you can decorate quickly.  Possibilities of what you can create with My Dream House and your Electric Quilt software is amazing.  To clarify, this is not a standalone software package - you need EQ5, EQ6 or EQ7 to have fun creating with My Dream House.

Angie's Bits & Pieces is an online pattern club that quilters can subscribe to on a yearly basis.  The annual membership fee is extremely reasonable and you have access to an amazing collection of spectacular designs.
Photobucket

Angie's Pattern Shop is her new site that allows quilters to purchase patterns without having to be a member of Angie's Bit's & Pieces Pattern Club.   While new, it is full of some delightful designs. I quickly fell in love with several cute designs.

Time to Get Ready for the Pets on Quilts Show

This is definitely a time where those that want to enter the 2011 Pets on Quilts Show should work on getting their pet theme quilts ready, photos of their cute cute pets on their beautiful quilts, and/or pet theme designs in EQ6/EQ7.
The 2011 Pets on Quilts Show will be held August 15th-19th.  This show is not a competitive show, but a time for friends to get together to share with each other how much they love their furry or feathered children, as well as their love of quilting.  And, I hope all the participants have fun at the show and good luck winning  prizes too!
country bird quilt Pictures, Images and Photos

While rules will be announced at the start of the show, you have a variety of options for your entry.  Actually, the rules are pretty flexible.  It is more of a matter that your entry take on a theme of pets and quilting.

Your entry could be a pet theme quilt (even an art quilt with a pet theme)
Pets Pictures, Images and Photos

Your entry could be a picture of your pet(s) on your quilt:
cat and quilt Pictures, Images and Photos

You could even enter that quilted snake you've surely made:
quilt snake Pictures, Images and Photos

Or a cute little rabbit on your quilt:

And, as I anticipate someone will ask...your entry can actually include more than one photo in your blog post, but only one entry per blogger/person. So, start taking a lot of photos now and you can decide how many you want to share in August!

I'm also going to try to learn how group photos work in such tools as Flickr, to allow non-bloggers to also participate (vs me writing a post for each non-blogger that enters).  In the past, when I've done  something using such a tool, I had problems with some participants that had photos that were not viewable by everyone.  If anyone has expertise in this area and wants to advise and/or help setup, let me know.  Otherwise, I'll try to figure this out on my own before the show starts.

If you come across old pictures, or take new photos that you want to give to me for potential use in a Pets on Quilts 2012 Calendar, please email me them to me.  I would like to create some calendars for a fundraiser for a Humane Society in So. Cal., but haven't yet received enough photos to print this calendar.

Prior to the official announcement of this show on August 15th, you can get a summary update of the plans on my page labeled "Pets on Quilts Show".  If you check now, you'll see insights on some of the sponsors that have signed on early.  I'll be updating this page to show sponsors as they come on board, as well as recognizing all sponsors in a special post prior to this event.

As we are on a pet theme, I wanted to share with you  insight on a giveaway that pet lovers may be interested in:   Just Contest Stuff has a giveaway that could be purrfect for your furry children.  Deadline:  May 28th

Quilt soup, Hash, Onions & Garlics, or Housekeeping?

Can you tell I'm struggling with what to title this post?  A few things popped up that I decided to hold off sharing insights on something I've been researching, and share the following insights with you today:

If you are a blogger that uses Blogspot, you probably are aware of the problems that happened this past week.  But I want to take time to heighten awareness that blogger did a restore of last Monday night and your posts made after that date could be at risk of being changed.  I had a post published last Tuesday, about the Fat Quarter Shop and received several comments.  Later, I realized that my released post had disappeared, along with the comments, and a "draft" version (written prior to Monday) had replaced it.  I had to write the post over again.

I did find the following message on a blogger help area:

We are very sorry that users are unable to publish to Blogger right now. We have rolled back the maintenance release from last night and as a result, posts and comments from all users made after 7:37 am PDT on May 11, 2011 have been removed. Again, we apologize that this happened and our engineers are working hard to return Blogger to normal and restore your posts and comments. We will post a report once this work is complete.

-The Blogger Team

Thus, I want to encourage anyone that released posts last Tuesday, or later in the week, to go back and verify your released posts are really what you want released.
On another note, I'm wanting to heighten awareness that the page on my blog labeled "giveaways" is updated a couple of times a week.  I'm also trying to update it every Monday, after researching to find new giveaways.  I'll do this as long as I view it is helpful to followers.

Hmm.  Seems like I had a larger list of misc items to include in this post, but this has become rather lengthy, so I'm going to stop here.

Happy Quilting.

Blogger Quilt Festival: Spring 2011

Amy's Creative Side </P>
<P>Bloggers' Quilt Festival

I thought the time would never arrive for Blogger Quilt Festival Spring 2011.  Seriously, especially given blogger problems.  But Blogger is up and I'm excited.  I have so enjoyed all of the Blogger Quilt Festivals and love being able to visit such a large number  of blogs and see such beautiful quilts.

Thanks to Amy who has been the idea woman and coordinator for these wonderful Blogger Quilt Festivals.  And how exciting it is to know that Amy is now off at Quilt Market promoting her first quilt book, "Modern Basics".  This is truly a fun quilt book that I recommend for quilters of all levels, especially those that like to make easy & fun modern quilts.

Here is my quilt that I want to share in this Blogger Quilt Festival.  It is a large Schnibbles quilt using the design from the book "Schnibbles Times Two" with a fun designn called "Bennington.  It is a design that I really wanted to spend time doing free-motion quilting on, but as I had a few too many UFOs to quilt, I sent this one off to Michaelanne Gephart of Flossie's Quilting for longarm quilting.  I think she did a super job and I'm very happy to have this quilt finished.

I hope you have fun at the Blogger Quilt Festival.  Fun to find delightful new blogs and see all of the inspirational quilts.

Sew Biz - Top Ten Signs of a Premiere Quilt Shop (online)

Note:  This is the 2nd version of this post, as the originally published version was rolled back to a "draft version", as a result of Blogger's problems the week of May 9th.  Comments on the original post disappeared and technically speaking, I had to re-write this post.

"Sew Biz" posts are topics that I periodically write that take on a tone that can focus on tips for good business practices, for those "in the business".  But they can also share insights for consumers by highlighting businesses with great business practices, products and service.  Today, I have a bit of both perspectives to share with you.

As I thought about writing this post, it made me think of what a perfect topic for a college case study.  While this won't be as detailed as a case study, I will share my top ten list for what makes a premiere quilt shop (online), while recognizing the wonderful contributions that "The Fat Quarter Shop" has given to our world of quilting.  To clarify, this isn't a paid advertisement, just a topic I'm passionate about and I do feel The Fat Quarter Shop would make a great case study, but for the purposes of this post, I'll try to simplify and share insights on why I think they stand out in a marketplace that has many wonderful businesses.

Kimberly and Kevin Jolly have built an premiere online quilt shop, with the help of a talented staff that loves quilting and quilters. It is easy to understand that they are appreciated customers from around the world and respected by many businesses too.  They actually make a great role model for many businesses.  So, today, my post is all about recognizing The Fat Quarter Shop.

Here is my list of top ten signs of a premiere online quilt shop:

#1 - New Products:  Every day the Fat Quarter Shop releases new products and has one of the best selections of new products that I've ever seen.  You can always fine their new products easily on the page labeled "What's New".

#2  The "Coming Soon" page provides insights on products that will soon be released and does a great job setting expectations on when these new products will come available.

#3 Great website that is well organized, great visuals, and easy to navigate. The Fat Quarter Shop's website is a roll model to any quilt shop that wants to increase traffic, sales, customer loyalty for virtual sales and/or virtual communication with customers.

The Fat Quarter Shop has a high google ranking, which helps to ensure that various internet searches will show your business on the first page of a search.  How this has been achieved is worthy of another case study, or SEW BIZ posting, so for now I'll simply say they are a roll model that deserve recognition for being the best of the best.

#4  Excellent Newsletter that is exciting, fun and insightful.  And they also have a wonderful Christmas Cloth Newsletter that shares insights on Christmas fabrics, projects, sales and everything you need to get ready for the Christmas holidays.

#5 Large product selection of current products.  Fabrics are selected from all major manufacturers, from Benartex,  Hoffman, Moda, RJR, Robert Kaufman and many more.  They also have a great selection of quilt patterns and kits and all at great prices.

#6  The Fat Quarter Shop is an active participant in social networking.  They have a wonderful blog called the "Jolly Jabber" that is always sharing great insights and having fun giveaways.  They actively chat with fans on their Facebook page and also on Twitter, where every Wednesday they also announce a special for their fans.

The Fat Quarter Shop has also been an excellent sponsor of various blogs for virtual quilt shows and other events.  They always giveaway wonderful prizes, of which the lucky winners always love their prizes and respective bloggers always appreciate having FQS as a sponsor. Clearly, they are very active in social media.

#7  They always have amazing Sales and update their sales page frequently.

#8  A large selection of seasonal fabrics, always with the newest releases available.

#9  Great customer service and same day shipping for all orders placed by 3pm CST.

#10 Exclusive kits and products that you can't find anyplace else. And they have several different quilt clubs and Block of the Month programs.

I can certainly understand why the Fat Quarter Shop won the  Golden Quilter Award for Best Quilt Store (online) for 2011 and for 2010.

I know there are many more examples that would be great to include in a case study of the Fat Quarter Shop, for being a roll model of Best Quilt Store (online).  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Having fun embellishing baby onesies

I enjoy machine embroidery and have particularly enjoyed some ME projects humming while I've been working on filing papers and organizing my sewing room.  One of my projects has been to embellish baby onesies, that get donated to baskets for wives of Military that are away fighting when their babies are born.

Operation Homefront volunteers try to do a variety of things to help Military families, while one is away at war.  In my area there is a group that works to make baby quilts, layettes, and essentially create gift baskets for women that deliver babies when their spouse is off fighting. As I heard they were in need of onesies, I try to look for ways to decorate basic onesies.  Some I make are machine embroidered.

Some I've decorated with various applique' designs, of which the AccuQuilt GO! Baby and other AccuQuilt dies work great.

I've also been searching the internet to come up with a variety of ideas to decorate ones and wanted to share some that I found and am planning on using to create cute onesies:

Char at Crap I've Made has a cute Applique Tie Onesie Tutorial.

Running with Scissors has a cute tutorial for a Summer Onesie for a little girl.

B is for Boys has a super cute tutorial for a Little Gentleman's onesie.

UCreate has a fun tutoriahttp://www.u-createcrafts.com/2009/05/ruffle-butt-onesie-tutorial.htmll for ruffle butt onesies.

Michael Miller also has a free pdf full of cute ideas for applique' on onesies.

Onesies are fun to decorate and make great gifts.  If you have any recommendations on how to decorate onesies I'd love to hear your insights.
