Electric Quilt Blog

I love reading blogs that share insights and inspire.  In this post I want to share insight about the Electric Quilt's Blog, as well as some tips on tools to help follow blogs.

EQ has a wonderful blog, that I believe is a great source of information that is perfect for anyone interested in Electric Quilt products, as well as anyone interested in learning about quilt designers, events, and more.  Clearly, there is more happening on this blog than sharing insights on EQ products.    For example:

Did you know that the talented quilt and machine embroidery designer, Sarah Vedeler, uses EQ to design her brilliant quilts?  I so enjoyed the post on the EQ blog about Sarah.

Lacey J. Hill is a talented designer and quilter, whom I also enjoyed reading about in the EQ Blog.

I also learned about Michele Scott, from the EQ Blog.  Michele is a talented multi-published quilt designer.

Then, there are great insights on EQ7 via the EQ blog.  I was very excited to learn that EQ has a new video about the EQ7 Image Worktable.  And, while I've played with this feature, I was inspired by this post and this amazing video that was shared on the EQ blog.

I could give a variety of more examples about why I enjoy following the EQ blog.  I hope you'll pop over to visit this blog, and that you'll decide it is a great blog to follow too.

While I'm sharing insights about following blogs, I also want to mention how much I enjoy Google Reader.  There are many that are new to following blogs, and probably more familiar with saving sites they visit to their Favorites.  While the Favorites utility is handy for saving links to sites that we like to visit, it doesn't let us know if a blog site has been updated or not.  With respect to following blogs, Google Reader is  a big step above the Favorites utility, as it allows you to track blogs that you want to follow and easily identify if a blog has been updated or not.  Thus, you don't click to visit a blog to find it hasn't been updated.  While I'll share more about Google Reader in the near future, a quickie overview follows:

1.  Go to www.google.com/reader
2.  Click the button "Add Subscription" and type in the web address for any blog that you want to follow.  For example:

http://www.doyoueq.com/blog/
http://www.sewcalgal.blogspot.com/

In the future, in lieu of visiting links thru your favorites, simply go to your www.google.com/reader and you'll be able to click and view blogs that have recent posts.  I visit www.google.com/reader daily, to ready a variety of quilting blogs.  EQ's blog is definitely one of my favorites!  And I do hope you'll pop over to visit their blog.  Feel free to leave them a note to let them know what you think of their blog, any recommendations for future articles, or changes to their blog.  Like most bloggers, I'm sure they'd love to hear from you!  Bloggers love comments!

Slice, by Making Memories

The "Slice", by Making Memories is a very popular cutting tool for scrapbooking and card making enthusiasts.  I've been investigating this tool, to see how it could fit in to the tool portfolio of quilting, embroidery and sewing enthusiasts.  I've concluded that the Slice is a great tool for quilting, embroidery and sewing enthusastists too!

There are several models of the Slice, as well as sizes of cutting mats.  What I evaluated is the Slice cordless digital designer, with a 12"x12" glass cutting mat. But, I believe my insights apply to various Slice models and kits (aka bundles).  So, please keep in mind is that I'm sharing insights on the "Slice" and there are many ways that this cutting device can be purchased in a variety of bundles or non-bundles, as well as a variety of design cards.

The Slice cutter uses pre-loaded memory cards with a variety of designs on each design card, where each design card typically includes an alphabet.  The slice will cut from 1" to 4", in 1/2" increments, of the designs on these cards.  While not all current design cards are items that may be of interest to quilting, embroidery, or sewing enthusiasts, there are many design cards with designs that would work well for this community.

Slice promotes a fusible web, at a reasonable price, that works well with their product and for purposes of quilting.   I also tested a few other fusible webs and found good luck with heavy weight fusibles, as well as lightweight fusibles.  But I did find that fusibles that have a paper backing (e.g. Steam-a-Seam Lite) did not work well with the paper backing. To clarify, if I removed the paper backing they worked well with the Slice.

I love how fast the Slice can cut very detailed applique designs.  While the Slice is designed to cut one layer at a time, the speed, accuracy, detail, and variety of design cards, makes this a great tool for quilting, embroidery and sewing enthusiasts.

The Slice was very easy for me to use.  My out-of-box experience was wonderful.  I simply prepared my fabric with fusible web, sprayed the Slice cutting mat with the Slice adhesive spray, pressed my prepared fabric onto the cutting mat,  inserted my design card into my Slice, pressed a few buttons on the Slice to select the design and size,  and pressed the "go" button on the Slice to initiate the cutting.  And, within seconds, the detailed design was cut.

For detailed applique designs, the Slice is an amazing product.  It far exceeded my expectations. And, I can just imagine the possibilities of creating many wonder quilts, sewn products with embellishments, and machine embroidery designs, all made with applique cut with the Slice.

I'm eager to create quilts, sewn products, and machine embroidery applique designs, using a variety of current Slice designs.  There are so many to choose from.  Personally, I'm looking forward to creating things using the Under the Sea Design Card, Calendar Design Card, Fa La La Design Card, Words & Expressions Design Cards, and so many more.

I definitely love the  Slice and highly recommend this product for Quilting, Sewing and Embroidery enthusiasts that love creating fun items with applique.  There are so many possibilities with the Slice, and the speed is amazing.

The only drawback I can think of with the Slice for quilters, is that it is limited to a 4" size.  But it is such an amazing product I'm excited with all the possibilities I can do with the Slice, and I hope that they'll someday have a Slice product that will help create larger applique sizes, and more quilt related designs, for quilting, sewing and embroidery enthusiasts.

The Slice is an amazing product AND available at an very reasonable price. It will certainly slice the time that it takes you to create applique designs.    Plus, you can shop at MyMemories Warehouse online to find some really spectacular deals!

Click here to see a helpful video on using the Slice to cut fabric.

I hope you'll come back to see what quilts, sewn, and embroidered projects I create using the Slice. I just couldn't wait for me to complete a project, to  be able to share insights with you on how great the Slice product is!

Out Of The Box, by Mary Lou Weidman

Mary Lou Weidman consistently wows quilters through her amazing lectures, workshops, books and patterns.  Her recent book, "Out Of The Box: unleash your creativity through quilts" is an other amazing book, was  published by Martingale & Company, home of That Patchwork Place.

In this book, Mary Lou continues to inspire quilters to be creative and stretch our imaginations!  Clearly, creativity is what this whole book is about.  She sets out to help quilters of all levels, by sharing her thoughts on being creative, whimsical, unique, and out of the box.   Mary Lou helps you discover your inner artist and teaches you how to tell a story through quilting.

The book starts off with providing inspiration that is very helpful, especially for those of us that are fearful of letting our creative spirit out of that box.  Mary Lou provides a fun checklist to help you determine if you are an out of box person, or already on your way!  But don't worry, if you feel your box is nailed shut, this book will help you open your box and crawl out of it!

While you may be scared to come out of the box, the chapter on "Getting Started" will really help you.   This chapter, and the majority of insights shared in this book are definitely unique.  This is an inspirational book that you'll certainly enjoy cover-to-cover.    I  enjoyed so many of these insights and found that they apply to many aspects of our lives, not just our world of quilting.  But then, this is probably what makes this book so amazing and how Mary Lou is able to inspire others to create such amazing story quilts.

Chapters are also included that provide insight on color, as well as fabric selection and supplies, along with how to create a short-story quilt.  You'll also find information to help with applique, building better borders, binding and more.  And, I loved the vast gallery of inspirational quilts that are included in this book.

This book is a must have for any quilter wanting to pursue creating Story quilts and a great book for those that are interested in creating quilts that are fun, inspiring, and make a statement.   I also recommend this book for anyone that wants to broaden their quilting skills, and create a fun project.  It is easy for us to get caught doing the same basic style of quilting and this book can certainly help you learn new things and take you on a different road in the world of quilting.

While you should be able to find a copy of this book in your local quilt store, you can also purchase it from the Martingale & Company's online store.

Snapware Storage

While organizing my sewing room, I decided to buy another Snapware Storage container.  I love how I can keep a project in a stackable container, adding/deleting stacks to fit my needs for storing, space constraints, and taking items to workshops.

Ok. I didn't buy just one.  Snapware storage products are a great price and value. And I lucked out to find these on sale.  With so many ways to use them, I couldn't resist buying more than one.

These storage containers go every place with me:  workshops, retreats, sew-cials, vacations, etc.   The handles and snaps are also very durable, unlike other brands (which I won't name) that the handles frequently break under the weigh of fabric.

And, they are so easily stackable that they really work great for organizing a sewing room.  Perfect for organizing fabrics, thread, patterns, novelties.

AccuQuilt Giveaway

The AccuQuilt GO! is definitely a product that SewCalGal recommends.  It is fun to see so many quilters buying AccuQuilt products and realizing how wonderful they are.  I frequently hear "how did I ever quilt before AccuQuilt?" or "I'm amazed how much faster I can make a quilt with my AccuQuilt".

AccuQuilt products are very easy to use, accurate, fast, and fun!  And, it is even more fun when you have a chance at winning an AccuQuilt GO! or some dies!

Pets on Quilts Show: List of Winners

I certainly had fun at the Pets on Quilts Show.  And I appreciated hearing from so many of you, about how you also enjoyed this show.  Thank you to everyone that made it such a special time.

I also want to take a moment to remind us all, that every day there are pets that are living in shelters, and some end up being put down due to lack of space.  While many of you have adopted pets from shelters, I hope we can all continue to be an advocate for our local shelters and encourage others to adopt, and looks for ways we can help our furry friends that live in these shelters.    I'm also hoping, that,  when possible, we can all donate a pet bed or quilt, to our local shelters so that these furry kids can also have a comfy nights sleep.  I know I'll be blogging more about this in the near future, but I do so hope you'll also help spread the word that animal shelters can certainly benefit from the help of quilters too!

Ok.  This is what you've been waiting for.  I've created a spreadsheet that contains a reference for every possible entry that one could win a prize in this show (e.g. PR, share a Pet on Quilt, View, View All, Vote, etc.).  With the exception of the winners of the Viewer's Choice Awards, I used a random number generator to select winners in each category.

Pets on Quilts Show - Its not over till its' over

In some respects the Pets of Quilt Show 2010 is now officially over.  But, as the benefit of virtual quilt shows you can continue to view the quilts, as come back as often as you like (24/7).  I am going thru all the comments to update my spreadsheet, to reflect entries for the various ways one can win a prize.  Once I get this completed I will be using a random number generator to pick names for each prize.  With luck, I hope to have this completed and be able to announce the winners tomorrow.  In the meantime, I wanted to share these silly riddles with you, as I heard them from someone visiting the show.  My apologies that I can not remember who shared this, and I hope you'll forgive me, but while I've had fun the past two weeks it has been a bit hectic.  I did think these riddles were cute, and thought you may know a small child that you want to share this with:

"What did the dog say when it sat on the sandpaper?"

"Rough, rough."

"What did the cat say when it sat on the sandpaper?"

"Meow."

I've had some good constructive feedback on better ways to have structured this quilt show, and I appreciate this feedback.  It will definitely help should it be held again in the future, as well as help me for related shows.  If you do have any recommendations you have not yet shared, feel free to leave a comment and/or email me.  I'd love to hear your recommendations.   As I host the Christmas Quilt Show, late fall/early winter, and the Golden Quilter Awards in the spring, I wanted to hold a show in the summer and certainly have enjoyed the Pets on Quilts Show.  But I'd also be interested in hearing feedback to determine if you'd like to see the "Pets on Quilts Show" being held in 2011, or have a recommendation for a different theme.  Lastly, I'm looking for ways to get more EQ6/EQ7 and fibre-arts quilters participating in these shows.  Again, if you have any recommendations or feedback please feel free to leave a comment or email me.

I also want to thank the sponsors for this show for their generosity, those that submitted their pets on quilts to share with all of us, those that helped with PR, and those that took time to view the entries and leave comments to those that shared.   Quilt shows wouldn't be fun without the quilts to see, and I do realize it takes time to enter any show, thus I am appreciative and want to encourage every quilter to enter shows (virtual, local, international).  This is the a great way for quilters to share, to learn, to support, to inspire, to have fun, and much, much more.

CutRite Bind Up Ruler by Quilter's Paradise

The CutRiteTM Bind Up Ruler, by Quilter's Paradise is an excellent tool to help finish your binding.  It enables an accurate way to match up the ends of your binding, in an easy and fast manner.  While I've been manually matching my binding for years, and thought I was doing a great job, I was really amazed how much easier it was using this tool.  As such, I wanted to share insights with you about this great ruler.

No measuring is required.  You simply use the ruler to mark the left side of your binding and the right side of the binding, cut, stitch, finished and wa la you'll have perfectly bound binding - every time!

There is even an excellent  video tutorial online and the ruler comes with instructions that are well written and contain great visuals that walk you thru every step.  Basically you lay this ruler on the left side of your binding, line it up onthe etched cross marks, mark your fabric and cut.  Then you rotate the ruler and do the same on the right side of the binding.  After these two key steps you are ready to sew your binding together, where you'll get perfectly matched binding every time!  I love it!

This ruler can be purchased online from Quilter's Paradise.  For wholesale information, please contact your Brewer sales representative or visit Brewer's web site.

It is amazing how simple this ruler is and what a helpful tool it is for quilters of all levels.  It would also make a nice gift for a quilting friend!

AccuQuilt Circle Die

The AccuQuilt Circle Die provides a number of opportunities to make beautiful quilts and other items. I very easily and quickly made this charity quilt using the larger circle on the Circle Die and the 6 1/2" Square die.  While the Circle die cuts 3 different circles (2", 3", 5"), I used the 5" circle for this particular quilt.

I had fun cutting fabrics for this quilt and was amazed how fast all the blocks came together.

I was lucky to have recently won a giveaway at Love Bug Studios of some lovely Christmas fabrics.  {Thank you Ebony}.

While I've used some of these Christmas fabrics on other projects, they bred with my Christmas fabrics, and I found I had enough to make another Christmas theme Quilt for the Linus program using this Circle die.

For this Circle block quilt, I cut 30 of the large circles and 30 - 6 1/2" squares, all of various scraps.  I visually pinned the circles to the centers of the squares and then used a straight stitch to secure the circles, stitching 1/4" from the outside of the circle, for each block.  Then, I followed normal assembly of blocks to create the  simple scrappy circle quilt.

As I had cut some extra blocks, I decided to play with them to see about creating a scrappier look by using 1/4 circle squares to create a block.  I ended up with enough to make a strip that I may use for the backing of the Circle quilt, or add a border to and create a simple table runner.

To create the quarter circle blocks, I paired two of my circle blocks with right side of fabrics facing each other.  I then drew a line down the center of the block.

I stiched a 1/4" seam on each side of the line and then cut the block in half, cutting along the center line that I had marked.  I then pressed open these two pieces to create two smal blocks that have "half circles".

I then paired my "half circle" blocks, where I turned the top block a 1/4 turn.  I then drew a line in the center of this pair of blocks and again stitched a 1/4" seam on each side of this line.  Next, I cut along the line that I had marked to create two separate blocks with 1/4 circles and pressed open.

While I love the effect of the circle block, I also love the 1/4 circle block and all the possibilities for playing with fabrics that this design could offer.  But what I love most, is how easy the AccuQuilt GO! Circle die was to use.

Here is an interesting video about the AccuQuilt GO! and Circle die:

I'd love to hear your thoughts about how I should use my left over blocks that I turned into the 1/4 Circle blocks.  Should I use this strip in the back of my Circle quilt, create a table runner with them, or do you have another suggestion?

If you are not yet a Fan of AccuQuilt on Facebook, you may want to sign up. It is a fun place, with alot of sharing and inspiration. Plus, AccuQuilt frequently holds Fun Friday Giveaways where you could win an AccuQuilt.

And, if you are interested in winning an AccuQuilt, check out the tab, at the top of my blog, labeled "Giveaways and Contests".  I gladly share insights on various giveaways and contests. Currently there are a couple of different giveaways where you could win an AccuQuilt GO!

Pets on Quilts Show: Final Update before show closes

First, I want to clarify that while the Pets on Quilts Show closes on the 21st (midnight PST), the benefit of virtual quilt shows is that all the entries will be viewable anytime after the show

I want to thank three new sponsors that have generously donated prizes:

The Electric Quilt Company

Angie Padilla (Angie's Bits 'n Pieces)

Martingale and Company, Home of That Patchwork Place

I also want to encourage everyone to check out the rules for this show, list of prizes and categories of prizes as this may help you win prizes.  There are many wonderful prizes and many ways to win.  While those that enter a Pet on Quilt in this show have many chances to win prizes, so do viewers, and voters. I'm just fearful some may have ignored some opportunities to win prizes.  For example:

1) Follow SewCalGal and leave a comment to let me know you are a follower, to get entered.

2)  Enter a Pet on Quilt (real pet, pet themed quilt, or even an EQ6/EQ7 pet theme design).  You just need to enter by end of day on 8/21.

3) Vote for your favorite Pet on Quilts, to get entered.

4) View quilts in the show and leave a comment on any of the SewCalGal posts about this show, and you'll be entered to win a prize.  And, it would be very nice if you could leave a comment on the blog post of those who entered the the show.

5) View ALL of the quilts in the show AND leave a comment on every blog post, for every entry.  Come back and leave a comment on this post to let me know you have viewed ALL of the quilts and what # of quilts you viewed.  This is a tricky rule, as there is a timing factor.  You post a comment too early and more quilts get entered, if someone else comes in and has viewed more quilts, they will be the winner under this rule.  Tip:  Be the last, or one of the last to enter.  But be sure to visit all the entries and leave a comment on each.  If audited and you overlooked something, you are disqualified.

When you do leave a comment, you may want to share insight on what prizes you may want to win.  I can't guarantee, but I'll try to match prizes up with the interest of the winner.  An example of such a comment might be "Enjoying the show, Mary (#5,14, 28)". Or send me an email to let me know what you are interested in.
I'm maintaining a spreadsheet with all the ways one can win a prize and logging info on what prize  you may want!

Sadly, there are several no-reply bloggers and Anonymous bloggers that I have no way to contact, should they win.  Those posting comments via the anonymous option need to leave their contact info, if they wish to win a prize.  Bloggers with no reply settings can check for tips on changing their settings on my page where the tab at the top of my blog is labeled "giveaways & contests", or leave your email address in your comment if you are not certain.

Again, entries to the show accepted thru 8/21 (midnight PST).  Just be sure to follow the rules.

Shortly after the show closes on the 21st (midnight PST), a post will be made to announce the winners. The winners will have five days to claim their prizes, or another name will be drawn for that prize.

It may seem complicated to review all the rules, categories of prizes, list of prizes, show entries, etc. But, just like visiting any big show there is a lot to see and do. Always easy to overlook a great opportunity and later be sorry, thus I hope you'll take time to review these tips, if you want to increase your chances for winning prizes in this show.  And, if it becomes too much, don't worry about it...just enjoy the show.

I hope you are enjoying the Pets on Quilts Show. I know I am.

I love cute quilting quotes.  Here are a few of my favorites:

  • A true friend is there when you blossom...and there when you wilt.

  • Quilts are like friends, a great source of comfort.
  • Creative minds are rarely tidy
  • Old quilters never die, they just go to pieces.

Pets on Quilts Show - Vote for your favorite quilts

I want to thank all the quilters that have entered the the Pets on Quilts Show!   And thank you to all the sponsors, who have generously donated wonderful prizes!

Currently there are 61 entries in the show, but the deadline to enter is August 21st (midnight PST), so there will hopefully be more entries.  I'm particularly hoping to see some entries that include EQ6/EQ7 designs, which the rules for this show fully approve.  I'd also love to see some fibre artists/mixed media artists enter!

Plenty of room in this show for more entries, and definitely oodles of prizes.

Today starts this shows' acceptance of votes for your favorite quilts.  There are three main categories for Viewer's Choice:
1)  Dog on Quilt
2)  Cat on Quilt
3)  Other Pet on Quilt

For each category there will be three awards (prizes) given.  And, for those that take the time to vote for their favorite quilts, by posting their vote in the comments box below, these viewers that vote will be entered for 3 of the prizes.  You can also get a special entry to win one of these prizes by posting on your blog insights that Voting for Viewers Choice is now open and link to this post.  Anyone can vote, but they must be able to be contacted to win a prize (e.g. no reply bloggers, anonymous comments without email address, etc. will not qualify to win a prize).

As there are many ways to win prizes, anyone interested in winning a prize should take time to review the categories of prizes, be familiar with the rules that provide insight on how to win prizes in this show, and the list of prizes.

Any quilt that is entered before August 21 (midnight PST) is eligible to be nominated for the Viewer's Choice Award, but clearly there is a benefit of entering earlier.  You can view ALL the quilts in this show, in order that they've been entered, by way of visiting the main show page.  The list below is the list that I've categorized, and updated as of August 17th.

Remember there are many ways to win prizes in this quilt show, besides entering a quilt.  So, I recommend that you take time to review the rules, categories of prizes, and prizes.  There are some fantastic prizes that you could win.  But please let me know what prize(s) you might want to win.  I can't guarantee, but I'll do my best to match prizes up to the interest of the winners.

Also, if you are voting using the Anonymous option on posting your comment (vote) or you are a no reply blogger, you need to leave your email contact info if you want to be contacted should you win a prize, as well as to have your vote counted.  It is just too difficult hunting winners down without appropriate contact info.  Likewise, for voting to be fair voters really need to leave their contact info.
