2011 Christmas Quilt Show - Welcome

Welcome to the 2011 Christmas Quilt Show.

First, I want to recognize and thank all the Santas and Elves that have helped with this show.

Our sponsors for this event have been very generous.  Thank you to all the sponsors!  This show is certainly more fun for those that enter projects in this show, as well as those that come to view this show, by having these wonderful sponsors:

Next, I want to thank everyone that takes the time to enter this show.  This show wouldn't happen without you.  But I do ask that before you add a link, please be sure to first read the rules that are listed further down in this post.

SewCalGal also wants to thank those that take time to view all the entries and leaves words of encouragement with the quilters that entered.  After all, one of the best parts of entering a quilt in a show is hearing positive feedback.

LINKY setup below.  For those that see a X next to their link, it appears to be a new feature of this linky tool and no one else sees it.  To clarify, the red X only appears on links that you've added via this linky tool:

Fun Fridays: Sewing with Silk and a Giveaway

Have you noticed how many quilts  made with Dupioni Silks have been winning awards at major quilt shows lately?  Have you seen how these silks make beautiful quilted table toppers, wallhangings, clothing items and more?  Have you had a chance to work with silk?

Dupioni Silk is a beautiful fabric and is also a favorite by many free-motion quilters.  For those that are taking the pledge for the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge, you really should consider doing some FMQ using silk.  You'll love it!

    Happy Thanksgiving

I hope you have a very Happy Thanksgiving.  Enjoy!

I also want to share with you one of my favorite holiday dessert recipes:

    CRANBERRY POUND CAKE
12 oz fresh cranberries, washed & drained
3 cups flour (set aside 1/4 cup of this flour)
    1 tsp baking powder
    ½ tsp salt
1 Cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
    2 cups sugar
4 large eggs at room temp
    1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
Grated zest of 1 orange (optional)
    1 tbl milk

    Glaze:
    ¼ cup orange juice
    1 3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar

    Directions:
Preheat oven to 325.  Spray Pam on your bundt cake pan.  Toss berries with the ¼ cup flour that you previously measured out.  Mix remaining flour with baking powder and salt in a bowl

In a large mixing bowl, blend cream butter and sugar.  Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.  Then add the vanilla and beat this mixture together until fluffy.    Add Orange Zest.  Fold in the dry ingredients.  Beat until well-blended and a firm batter forms.  Very gently fold in the berries.  Spoon the batter into bundt cake pan.  Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes, but be sure to test by poking a wooden bamboo stick, or a thin wooden pick, in the middle of the cake  to see if it comes out clean.  If the stick isn't clean, cook for 1-2 additional minutes and re-test with the wooden pick.

Turn the cake out of the bundt pan, allowing it to cool on a baking rack.

    Directions for glaze:
Blend the juice and the confectioners’ sugar until smooth.  Be sure the cake is at room temperature, before drizzling the glaze over the top of the cake.

Let the gaze harden for a few hours before serving.

    Free-Motion Quilting Made Easy

Free-Motion Quilting Made Easy: 186 Designs from 8 Simple Shapes, by Eva A. Larkin and published by by Martingale & Company, home of That Patchwork Place, is a "must have "quilting book for anyone interested in learning free-motion quilting, or wanting to learn new designs.

Eva shares insights, in this book, that can help quilters learn the basics of free-motion quilting.   She has a great motto of "if you can draw it you can quilt it", and she shows you steps to to take basic shapes and turn them into a free-motion quilting design.    While there are 186 designs shared, all from 8 simple shapes, insights are also provided to help you learn to create your own designs.

The basic shapes used to create these free-motion quilting designs are hearts, diamonds ovals, loops and more.
This book has an excellent "Mix and Match Designs" gallery that would work great for quilting various blocks, and many design ideas for quilting borders.

Instructions are easy to follow making this an excellent book for those starting out on the journey to learn free-motion quilting.  And, it is a great resource for more experienced FMQ quilters that want to learn more FQM designs, as well as gain insights to help teach others the art of FMQ.

Also, included is a gallery of quilts that show FMQ techniques shared in this book.  Eva does an excellent job sharing insights in this book on FMQ and I hope to see more quilting books sharing her insights in the future.

I hope you have a chance to check out this book at your local quilting store or at Martingale & Company's online store.  This will also be a great reference source for those taking the pledge for the 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge.
