From Feathers To Flames

Leah Day has written and published another wonderful book titled "From Feathers to Flames: 60 Intermediate Free Motion Quilting Designs".  This is definitely a "must have" book for any quilter with intermediate free-motion quilting (FMQ) skills, or those with expertise that want to learn new FMQ designs.
For those that are beginner FMQ quilters, or wanting to learn FMQ, I do recommend Leah's earlier book "From Daisy to Paisley", which I have previously shared insights about.   From Feathers to Flames takes you to the next level of free-motion quilting!

The 60 intermediate free motion quilting designs in this book all have great visuals and insights to help you quilt these designs on your quilts, resulting in spectacular quilts.  The book has various sections to share insights on:
  • The Free Motion Quilt Project
  • Filler Design Theory
  • Echoing and Travel Stitching
  • Memorizing Quilting Designs
  • Free Motion Quiting Tips
There are ten (10) chapters packed with amazing designs that have similar free-motion quilting tecniques, yet create unique results.  Leah also shares tips to create these designs, where you'll build expertise with echoing & traveling.  Excellent insights are shared to help you learn to memorize quilting designs, as well as a variety of tips to help you achieve beautiful free-motion quilting.

This book is also helpful to use as you plan out what quilting designs you want to use on your quilts and is also a handy size to keep next to your machine, as a reference, when you are doing your free-motion quilting.

Each of the 60 designs in this book has a very high quality photo or drawn illustration with instructions on how to quilt the design in your own quilts. And Leah shares insights on how various design categories work best in various quilt designs. Some samples of these designs are:

Sharp Stippling

Heart Paisley

Echo Shell

Flame Flower

Pebble Loop

Many have enjoyed being a follower of Leah's blog and/or free videos on you-tube, but her book "From Feathers to Flames" is an excellent resource, available at a reasonable price.  Afterall, it is difficult to hold a blog or youtube next to your quilt as you plan out your free-motion quilting designs, or as you want a reference tool next to your machine as you quilt.

Again, SewCalGal highly recommends "From Feathers to Flames" for any intermediate free-motion quilter, and even those experienced with FMQ that are interested in learning new designs.  Heck, it is even a good source for a beginner that aspires to reach a higher level of FMQ skills too!

While I'm happy to be able to share insights with you on Leah's new book, I'm also wanting to wish this very talented lady a Happy Birthday.  Yes, the talented Leah is celebrating her 28th birthday on October 8th.  And, to celebrate she is having an awesome birthday sale on her online store  that I hope you'll check out ASAP.  There is a great bundle package for her book "From Daisy to Paisley" , her DVD "Beginner Free Motion Quilting Fillers, and her DVD "Free Motion Quilting Basics for Beginners".

As soon as I saw that book was available I had to have it! It is amazing. I enjoy just reading it, let alone using it for reference while I FMQ. It is really a great help and resource.

That book is definitely on my to-buy list. Her designs are great for longarmers as well as DSM quilters. And having seen her quilting in person, I have to say that it is so beautiful it just takes your breath away. She is definitely one of our quilting treasures.
