While there are many wonderful sponsors for the Year of Red and White Quilt Challenges and many prizes that will be awarded later this year, the Design It! Challenge had a special sponsor and prize. One of the designs entered would be selected by Island Batik and given batik fabrics that they could use to make their design (or use to make something else). But there is also a possibility that if they make their design that there finished quilt could later be showcased by Island Batik (e.g. maybe displayed at Quilt Market or another venue where Island Batik had a booth or display). And while the designer could certainly write their pattern and sell it, where both Island Batik and SewCalGal would be delighted to provide PR for that design, the designer might even want to write a free pattern or blog tutorial that could be shared in Island Batik's website. Essentially, the door would be opened for this lucky winner to build a relationship with Island Batik and where that goes may have endless possibilities.
There were many designers and want to be designers that submitted one, or more entries to this challenge. All the entries are lovely quilt designs that would make stunning quilts with red and white fabrics, or even different fabrics. SewCalGal and Island Batik hopes that the designers that submitted their entries will turn these designs into patterns for sale, or for free, possibly even blog tutorials. It would certainly be fun to see a variety of quilts made with each design. While a difficult decision to select one winner, out of all the beautiful entries, Island Batik did reach a decision. That lucky winner will be receiving a bundle of batiks, from Island Batik's. And that lucky winner will also be able to select which batiks they want from Island Batik's current fabric selection, as well as from fabrics that will be introduced at the Fall Quilt Market.
The winning quilt design:
And this beautiful design was created by Laura C. (LC's Cottage), who used EQ7/Electric Quilt Software. She used "variations" of a lovely block design called Aunt Sukey's Choice that measures 6" x 6" finished.
And her finished quilt design measures 84.5″ x 96.5″. It is designed to use two different shades of red and one shade of white (or for batiks, nearly white neutral fabrics).
SewCalGal also wants to remind everyone that the Make It! Challenge is currently going on thru September 30th. Everyone is invited to make a Red and White theme quilt, of any size and style. To clarify, Winners of the Make It Challenge, as well as virtual shows will be randomly selected, as will many winners that entered the Design It! Challenge, other than the winner of the special prize sponsored by Island Batik. The more events in the Year of Red and White Challenges, the more chances you get to win prizes.
Check out the Make It! Challenge post for more info and a linky to enter. When you enter this challenge, or any of the challenges or virtual shows this year you are automatically entered to win prizes donated by our sponsors. Winners for the Year of Red and White Quilt Challenges will be announced late October or early November.
Sponsors for the Year of Red and White Quilt Challenges include Island Batik, Martingale, Fat Quarter Shop, Classic Metal Company: Barn Quilts For Your Home, Leah Day Designs, Aurifil, Miska's Playground, Prarie Sky Quilting, McCalls Quilting, and Quilt N Bee.
