While there are frequently quilt alongs to make a quilt project with other participants, rarely does SewCalGal see a QAL for free-motion quilting. And, as I've learned about one hosted by the very talented Leah Day, I'm delighted to be able to share it with you today.
The Building Blocks Quilt is designed to finish at 48" x 56" with 42 pieced and quilted blocks to create a throw size quilt, which you could easily make into a larger quilt if you wish. It uses the quilt as you go technique on 8" squares that you can easily do free-motion quilting (FMQ) using just about any domestic sewing machine.
Each week in 2014, Leah will share new videos for you to watch and follow along. Leah's mission with the Building Blocks Quilt Along is to teach a variety of piecing and free motion quilting techniques on a totally beginner level.
To truly participate in this QAL program you do need to purchase and download the pattern, which contains all the piecing and quilting information for this design. To clarify it contains info on fabric requirements, cutting instructions, block and quilt assembly, and all of the FMQ designs that you can also use to mark your quilt (if you wish to use marking) and more. And, at $24 the cost to join this QAL program and support Leah Day is well worth this nominal fee!
SewCalGal highly recommends to anyone interested in learning FMQ to join this QAL program. You'll be amazed how much you'll learn about quilting, FMQ and have fun with Leah Day in 2014. And, if you are already confident with FMQ, but you know someone that wants to learn I hope you'll encourage them to check out the Building Blocks Quilt FMQ QAL.
SewCalGal also recommends this program for those that may want to improve their piecing skills, as well as learn the technique to "hinge" quilted blocks to make a completed quilt.
While this program has already started, this is still a perfect time to join the fun. Here is a list of sessions that Leah has already released for this program and it would be very easy to get on board by joining this FMQ QAL now.

Wow! Leah is so generous with her talents....I've wanted to learn better FMQ and also to learn how to put QAYG blocks together! Thanks for the heads up, SewCalGal!
Her videos make it so easy to learn too. I have started this but am on hold until my machine gets back from servicing.
