Designer Showcase: Terri Stegmiller, New Designs Revealed, Freebies and a Giveaway

SewCalGal is absolutely delighted to be able to share insights with you today on Terri Stegmiller, as I've been a fan of Terri for many years.

Terri is a mixed media textile artist from Mandan, North Dakota.  She enjoys working with a variety of artistic medias, but her main love is art quilting.  Like many artists, she finds inspirations from her surroundings and enjoys bird watching and cats, which you can frequently see in her work!  Her style is whimsical and cheerful, with great use of color and texture that draw the eye in to want to linger and enjoy, as well as want more!

Terri has authored and co-authored several books, with the latest entitled Twelve by Twelve: The International Art Quilt Challenge.  She has also had work published in several books and magazines, as well as exhibited in juried and non-juried shows.  And, she has designed several quilt patterns.  You can find Terri's patterns and art for sale in her Etsy shop.

Some of her designs are also available on fabric, at  Spoonflower.

Teri has also designs stencils that are quite versatile and very popular with those that want to create texture on fabric with the use of textile paints. You can find her stencils at StencilGirl Products.

Many of her quilts have been exhibited at international quilt shows.  Needless to say, I've always been delighted to see Terri's quilt at such quilt shows.

AN INFORMAL INTERVIEW WITH TERRI:

How long have you been sewing....?

I became interested in quilting around the mid 1990's.  My first bed-sized quilt was for my bed, which was a queen.  It took me several years to complete.  I hand quilted it and not knowing better I used two layers of fluffy batting because I really liked that trapunto look, although at the time I didn't know that was the name for it and that I was going about it all wrong. 

I decided that bed quilts and traditional quilting wasn't for me.  I just didn't have the patience for the repetition and the time it took to complete a quilt.  As the Internet became more and more common I started scouring around and somehow came across art quilting and mixed media work.  I was so intrigued.  I soaked up all the information I could and experimented with most everything that interested me.  I've tried many different techniques and mediums and I think I've finally found what I most enjoy doing today from all the trials and experimentations. I've probably been art quilting since 2005-2006, about the time I started blogging.

What comes first the fabric or the design?

 I love designing, so for me it's the design that comes first.  I have several sketchbooks that I draw and doodle in and even sketch complete design ideas in.  Sometimes I will page back through a sketchbook and come across something that I drew a few years ago and develop into a quilt, stencil or Thermofax screen.

What do you enjoy doing when not quilting?

 I enjoy painting, both on paper and traditional painting surfaces and also on fabric. I love designing patterns and recently started learning about surface pattern design in the hopes of one day seeing my designs printed on fabric, home decor items, etc.  I have designed a line of stencils that are available through StencilGirl Products (www.stencilgirlproducts.com), and I design Thermofax screens that are available through my Etsy shop (www.etsy.com/shop/TerriStegmillerArt).

I also enjoy other types of sewing such as making handbags, notebook covers, pouches, and more.  I love to incorporate my hand painted fabrics into these projects.  I even dabble in garment sewing at times.

Do you enter contests? Have you won awards?

I have entered quilts into a few juried and non-juried shows.  In my local area I have won some awards.  This year I entered a quilt in the International Quilt Festival-Houston, and was thrilled to win an Honorable Mention.  I also entered this year's Quilt Alliance contest and I won an Honorable Mention there as well.

SewCalGal was certainly delighted to see this quilt at Fall Quilt Market.  It was also on exhibit at IQF Houston.

Time to let the Cat Out of the Bag.....

Terri has just released two new designs:



Terri used mixed-media techniques in making her beautiful pieces of art using these designs.  Her techniques were published in the August/September 2013 issue of Quilting Arts Magazine.  With the copy of that issue you could replicate her style of art using these design patterns, or you could make these designs your own style using a variety of mixed-media products, or even using raw-edge applique.  I'm confident how ever one creates with Terri's designs, they'll come up with something that is whimsical and fun.
