Many people that love to machine quilt want to make money using their skills. I'll even periodically, hear from those that want to start a machine quilting business, but have no idea how to start, or maybe they've started their business, but didn't necessarily have a solid plan and are looking for tools to help them build a stronger business. As such, I was excited to learn about a book that was written especially for those that enjoy maching quilting and would like to turn their passion into a business.
"How To Start Your Own Machine Quilting Business", by Chuck Smith Written by Kathleen Marshall and Judy Turner, two women with more than 8 years experience in the machine quilting business. Chuck Smith purchased the rights to this book in 2003, updated it and the 2nd revision is now available in e:book format.
Here are a few key items covered in this book:
- The Introduction section walks you thru where to start, pros & cons of starting a machine quilting business and what some of the risks might be.
- Getting Your Business Started provides insights on Government rules & regulations, types of business structures, finding capital, business insurance, setting up your workspace, finding & hiring employees, etc..
- Information on creating Your Business Plan really helps you build a plan for where you want to take your business.
- Pricing & Bidding
- Marketing
- Helpful Hints
- Keeping Records
This book is 147 pages, organized in sections that are easy to read and understand. Perfect for those that have a business background, as well as those that do not. It is packed full of insights, tips, sample forms, etc.. And, it is very reasonably priced too!
The publisher also shared that the goal of this book is not to be a complete guide to everything you need to know about business, but to get you thinking about what activities need to take place for you to get your machine quilting business on the right track.

I have often thought of doing this but wonder if it would take the fun out of quilting and if I would have time to do the things I would want to do....but certainly a good book...
Excellent post!
Have a great day.
Always, Queenie
Thank you for your post. I've seen this ad many times but worried it was a scam. I believe it is located under multiple web addresses and looked fishy to me.
I'm glad to know they're for real. I may have to take a closer look now.
Also Leah Day has some posts with information
on this too: Here is the link to her first of ten posts.
Links to all her quilt business posts are at the
bottom of the post.
