The Next Generation of Quilters

Do you ever think about the next generation of quilters?  I wonder what new tips, techniques and styles they may bring to our world of quilting.  While I love traditional quilting, I also enjoy seeing how quilting evolves and grows into an expanded number of styles over time.

Our world of quilting is currently at one of the highest periods of growth, with more people taking up quilting all the time.  And this movement excites me.  Yet, I also hope that the art of quilting is embraced warmly by future generations.   I do so enjoy hearing when quilters teach their children, grandkids, neighbor's children, or even classes at a store for children to quilt.   And, I really enjoy seeing quilts made by kids entered into quilt shows.  I've often wondered why there isn't a special quilt show for kids?

To my delight, and I hope your delight too, the 2012 Road to California Quilt Show will have a special quilt exhibit with a theme of "The Next Generation" of quilters.

A call for entries for this exhibit has for young quilters between the ages of 7 years and 16 years, as of October lst, 2011.  The objectives of this exhibit is to promote and encourage quilt making by younger quilters in a non-competitive environment.  Quilts will randomly be selected for this exhibit and will not be judged or juried.  All accepted quilts will receive a special ribbon and label from Road, one yard of fabric from Hoffman California Fabrics, and a one year magazine subscription to any one of the All American Craft Magazine titles.

And there are other prizes too!  There will be a random drawing of accepted quilts will be conducted to determine the winners of prizes including a Janome Sewing Machine, a Bernette Sewing Machine, a “Go Baby” die cutting machine and other prizes.
This is your opportunity to mentor a future quilter this summer and give them the experience of entering their masterpiece in a “big” show.  Rules and the entry blank are on Road's web site.

For those who don't qualify for "The Next Generation" Exhibit, don't worry as you the contest rules for the 2012 have been posted on their website.  There is over $25,000 worth of cash prizes and the $3,000 grand prize Best of Show, sponsored by Hoffman California Fabrics, and everyone is expecing another year of spectacular entries!

To clarify, there is a call for quilt entries for the 2012 Road to California Quilt Show.  As always, adults can enter in the normal manner, but this "Next Generation" exhibit is open for children to enter.  For inspiration, here are a few photos of beautiful quilts from prior shows, all made by Adults:

One thing that I've noticed is that quilting goes in and out of fashion - but there is always someone quilting! Right now the fun and easy "Modern Quilt" movement has made quilting approachable - plus a lot of ladies who were doing advanced traditional quilting are making the leap to art quilts - trying out new techniques and gadgets!
For me - my daughter just claimed old my Elna as her own and wants to explore with it this summer - I told her get after it! There is plenty of scissors, fabric and thread to go around!!

Thanks for letting us know about this! I am going to encourage my granddaughter to enter this. She is 8 1/2 and has made about 3 ro 4 small quilts so far.

Someone's parents must enjoy cocktails. The quilts are all cute. Some talented tweens and teens out there.

I wish I was closer to my grandchildren to encourage their love of art.

That second quilt is amazing!

It is also nice that they want to recognize and encourage the next generation.

What a great topic! We try to get all the kids in our shop to look at the fabrics & pick out 1 they like best. The fabric "hide & seek" is fun for them and then we can talk about what would they make with it and why. Sparking them to think & ponder is really where things click with most kids I meet.

I started quilting almost a year ago and I have to admit I thought that there were less persons interested in quilting; was I WRONG. It is a multi-million industry. What got to me was the beautiful fabrics out there, my favorite is vintage I have five quilt shops within a 20 min. drive from my house. This does not include Joann, Hancock, Hobby Lobby.

I've been quilting on and off for over 40 years. I've been surprised to see some of the quilt blogs from younger quilters, and to see what direction they are taking their quilting. I've been encouraged to try using different fabrics and prints now, instead of just heading for the traditional prints and colors when in a fabric store!

Isn't it amazing how quilting has grown in the last 25 years!! A couple of years ago I went to a quilt show in Jacksonville FL and there was a special exhibit for new young quilters. Some ages 8-12. What amazing things they did :-)

Darlene, I posting to an older post. Yes, me email bounced but it should be back online in the next day or so. I simply forgot to pay the bill (since March) and I guess they got tired of waiting. I've had so much going on with my hard drive crash that I forgot about online services and such. I'm slowly getting things back in order. Just paid bill tonight so I may have to call in order to restore the service.
