Embroidery and Patchwork Revisited and a Giveaway

While I'm anxious to share my insights about the new book "Embroidery and Patchwork Revisited", I want to start off sharing an excellent Press Release:

Janice Vaine's new book, Embroidery and Patchworkd Revisited, is an inspired by antique quilts, and reverently revisits them to celebrate hand-stitching today.  It is a must-have for everyoe who admires the timeless beauty of hand embroidery.  Teacher, author and embroidery expert Jan Vaine walks readers step-by-step through all the fundamentals, beginning with her "in the classroom with Jan" section.

Jan gives detailed, step-by-step instructions for:
Creating and piecing planned crazy quilt blocks, including block templates, stitch combinations and embroidery motifs;
Embroidering the sampler block including supplies and techniques;
19 basic stitches with stitching illustrations.

The small practice projects will deepend readers' skills and give them the confidence to apply the techniques to larger quilts.  Spectacular quilt projects, both large and small, clearly show how embroidery enhances and complements curved and straight-edged piecing and applique' in a way that's both orderly and engaging.  Embroidery and Patchwork Revisited is designed with precision for all quilters and stitchers of all skill levels.  Nineteen basic stitches are clearly and beautifully illustrated.  It is filled with design ideas, stitch patterns and inspiration for all hand stitchers.

Janice Vaine - seamstress, quilter, applique' enthusiasts, pattern designer, and teacher - enjoys sharing her love of needlearts with her students.  Her teaching credentials include the past 6 years at The Elly Sienkiewicz Applique' Academy, the International Quilt Festival, Texas quilt guilds, and quilt and sewing shops for over 20 years.  Janice is author of The Art of Elegant Hand Embroidery, Embellishment and Applique' and Applique' and Embroidery Fundamentals.  She lives in Jacksonville, Florida.

SewCalGal's Review:

Embroidery and Patchwork Revisited is an excellent resource for those interested in  learning embroidery, as well as making embroidered patchwork quilts and other projects.  It is rare to see a book published on this topic and this book is one of the best I've seen published for this subject.

Blocks (A,B,C,D) come with easy to follow instructions for creating these patchwork blocks, and templates are also included.  The classroom section for Embroidering the Sample blockers come with well written instructions and great visuals for a variety of stitches (e..g Backstitch, Blanket/Buttonhole Stitch, Bullion Stitch, Buttonhole Stitch Long and Short, Butonhole Stitch Up and Down, Chain Stitch, Chain Stitch Detached, Chain Stitch Heavy, Colonial Knot, Cross Stitch,  Feather Stitch, Fly Stitch, Herringbone Stitch, Interlaced Stitch, Laced Cretan Stitch, Pistal Stitch, Sheaf Stitch, Stem Stitch, and Straight Stitch.

Designs are also included for a variety of projects:  Etui (small decorative case), Marguette Tote, Scrappy Tidbits (18"x18" miniature quilt), Fan Favorite (28"x28"), and  A Quilt To Dream Under (70"x70").

This is a must have book for anyone interested in creating Embroidered Sampler quilts and/or gifts, as well as those interested in learning more hand embroidery designs and techniques that can easily be adapted for a variety of projects (e.g. embellishment on clothing, bags, dish towels, etc..).

You should be able to check out this book in your local quilt shop, but if you don't find it let them know you are interested in this book. It is so new they may not have heard of it.  And, of course you can also purchase it online from Landauer Publishing.

  58. One of my dearest friends is extremely busy right now, raising a young family. We often talk about what it will be like in a decade or so, when her life is quieter and we can sit and create together--I'm a quilter, she's a stitcher. I have been collecting embroidery books and giving them to her when I feel like she might benefit from a reminder of the beautiful things she loves that will be waiting for her when the time is right. This book looks like a lovely addition to those gifts. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, and for the chance to enter the giveaway.

  59. I am a follower and my second quilt (which I am still working on) was completely done by hand. In the class I took, we had to make our templates, trace them on the fabric and cut out with scissors (no rotary cutters) and then everything was pieced by hand.
