Two great gifts for children are: quilts and books! And, to SewCalGal's delight, with the help and support of Martingale, we want to share insights with you about International Book Giving Day. And, we are also hosting a giveaway for a copy of "Cute Quilts for Kids", by Kristin Roylance.
International Book Giving Day a 100% volunteer run volunteer initiative aimed at increasing children's access to and enthusiasm for books. There are oodles of easy ways to get involved. You may want to plan a fundraiser for a non-profit literacy program of your choice. Or maybe coordinate a book swap. Bloggers can help with PR and join a link-up party from February 14th through February 21st. You can even help distribute copies of a free downloadable poster for this event.
Participants may also want to give a book to a friend or family member, leave a book in a waiting room, donate a book, or help in many other ways. Visit International Book Giving Day's website for more information on how you may want to help.

Every year I make a quilt for the Salvation Army Christmas tree angel. This year I have made three to donate at Christmas.
ReplyDeleteAt least half of my quilts go to kids, I donate to the local women's shelter and other charities. The other half go "to the dogs". Both need lots of love, warmth and comfort.

ReplyDeleteBooks have been a huge part of my children's lives. Whenever we give a child a gift, we often include a book aimed at their age range. Books are the key to opening so many wonderful doors. I always told my children, if you can read a book, you are never alone. It's like having a friend with you whenever you need one. Thanks for the insights.

ReplyDeleteI just finished a quilt that will be gifted to one of my daughter's friends who is expecting their first child. My daughter's friends are all at the stage of having babies so this book would be VERY helpful. Seems like I make a lot of baby quilts!

The last quilt for a child that I worked on I was actually just helping my daughter finish her first quilt ever. It was for her boyfriend's niece, and she even did machine applique! There are lots of babies in the family and this book provides many great projects. Thanks for the chance to win it!

ReplyDeleteI recently made a quilt for my future great niece or nephew, who is due March 5. I adapted a pattern to get the size I wanted. I've spent years as a teacher, and have taught many children to read. It's so exciting when they choose to pick up books, and are able to read them. The look on their face is priceless. Thanks for celebrating!

ReplyDeleteIt really is fun to make quilts for kids. A couple of years ago I gave my grandson and granddaughter each a quilt for Valentine's Day. When they opened the packages they wrapped the quilts around themselves, then spread them on the floor and danced on them. It was a joy to watch them.

ReplyDeleteThe last quilt I made for a child was a red, white, green, blue and yellow zig zag quilt. It is for our church quilt ministry and will go to the local pregnancy help center or a foreign orphanage.

Last year I donated a dozen children's quilts through our quild. I love making children's quilts. That is my favorite thing to do.
ReplyDeleteRight now I am binding two little baby quilts to go to the local Ronald McDonald House. Coincidentally, when I go there, I'll be bringing some children's books for the kids who stay at RMH. Right now my favorite books for kids are "The Loud Book" and "The Quiet Book".

ReplyDeleteI adore books almost as much as I adore quilting! My two favorite ways to spend my money :) We've always given books to our nieces and nephews, and of course our own children had volumes of books to choose from. Books are the window to the world. I hope that never changes.

Yesterday, I spent time in my sewing room (Yahoo!) cutting flannel to make a rag quilt for a teen boy. our guild donates quilts to the children's hospital in Atlanta. There is a shortage of larger quilts for older kids. Thanks so much for the goodies (bookmarks) and a fun giveaway! That sailboat quilt is awesome!
