San Diego Qult Show

The San Diego Quilt Show (SDQS) is one of the favorite quilt shows among quilters in Southern California. It is also a popular reason, for those that do not live in Southern California, to come vacation in Southern California.

From my perspective, whether you live in Southern California or you live far away, this is a delightful quilt show that you'll not want to miss.

Plus, there is so much going on in the quilting world in Southern California, during the SDQS, that this is a show you'll not want to miss. Many local quilt stores hold specials during the SDQS, and there is so much to do for the entire family, that this is really a great place to visit.

This delightful show will be held at the San Diego Convention Center, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, September 17th - 19th, 2009.

San Diego Convention Center, 111 West Harbor Drive Hall A
Thursday & Friday 10am-6pm; Saturday: 10am to 5pm
Admission: 11 years old & up: Single day pass $8
Three day pass $12 4-10 years old: $5

The Guest Artist this year is Shirley Greenhoe.

Shirley was actually the first machine quilter in San Diego, back in 1986. She is a professional Machine Quilter that is originally from San Diego (born & raised). But she moved around the country, to support her husband Greg's work with The Forstry Service. While Greg is now retired, they call Missoula, Montana their home. Over the years, Shirley has gained a vast amount of experience and created a unique style. At the upcoming SDQS some of Shirley's early work, as well as her current work, will be on display.

Shirley will also be available during the Charity Preview, as well as during show hours to meet and greet show attendees to discuss her methods and techniques.

This year's show includes special exhibits and over 400 quilts on display.

Special exhibits include the 2009 SDQS Fashion Chalenge, Quilting Bee, IOLCC (Cloth Doll Exhibit), Opportunity Quilts, and a Charity Auction benefiting Michaelle House.

I highly recommend attending the Preview Party, which benefits Michaelle House.

This event allows a limited number of participants to have a first look at the quilts and purchase from vendors before opening day. The Preview Party provides an a less crowded environment, plus the ticket prices is 100% tax deductible as all proceeds raised from the Preview Party go to help the Michaelle House.

The Michaelle House is a program that runs several houses for people who are suffering from life threatening illness and have no place to go. Years ago, when the houses were firsst established, almost all of the residents spent their final moments on earth being cared for here. Now, with advances in medical treatments and great care, many residents are restored to independant living and re-enter society to become productive citizens once again.

Michaelle House is operated by Fraternity House Inc. The mission of Fraternity House Inc. is to provide a warm and carying home where men and women disabled by HIV/AIDS can receive comprehensive care and services in order to rebuild their health and return to independent living, or where their last days in comfort and dignity. '

To clarify, the pre-view party will be held on Wed., September 16th from 6-9pm. Prepaid tickets are $25, $35 at the door, if tickets are still available.

Last year SDQS was able to donate $17,000 to The Center for Community20Slutions, which helps domestic violence victims.

SDQS is also an all volunteer, non-profit coproration. Volunteers are still needed to help with this event, as well as help plan future shows. The volunteer form is on the website, or volunteers can leave name and email and phone number on the SDQS voice mail line: 619-443-2706, or email to sdqs2002@hotmail.com

For those coming from out of town, here are some recommendations for places to stay:

* San Diego Mariott Hotel & Marina{next to the Convention Center & on San Diego Bay}

* Catamaran Resort Hotel {in Pacific Beach, close to Sea World}

* Hilton Hotel {on Mission Bay, near Sea World}

* Paradise Point Resort & Spa {on Mission Bay, near Sea World}

I hope you will come to this great show and take some time to enjoy beautiful San Diego.

I also hope that you'll consider entering a quilt for future SDQS. Entry forms for 2010 will be available at this 2009 SDQS, enabling those interested to plan a year in advance. The SDQS is open to all quiltmakers who meet the deadlines and fill out the entyr form. The SDQS is not a judge or juried show. General display has Viewers Choice Awards in several categories: Quilts & Fashions. Cash and Ribbons are awarded. For 2010 there will also be a Quilt Challenge and fabric packets will be available at the SDQS booth, at the entrance to the show. Rules & guidelines are also provided in these packets.

Note: Photographs of quilts shown in this article were taken during prior San Diego Quilt Shows.

The Quilted Closet

Elaine Waldschmitt is the delightful and talented owner of The Quilted Closet. She is also a pattern designer, fabric designer, and author. As a little girl, Elaine grew up watching her grandmother stitching hand-appliqued quilts during the cold, Minnesota winter nights. Elaine took a 4-H sewing class, when she was nine years old, and from that point on she has been an avid sewer and quilter. Her parents even gave her her very own sewing machine as a High School graduation present!

The Quilted Closet® was opened in the mid-1990's, and always has been home-based business, allowing Elaine to have flexibility with her family. Her online store has a broad selection of products, including her great patterns, books and fabrics.

She also travels to shows, of which you may be lucky to see her and these upcoming events:

September 11-13, 2009 Quilt Expo, Madison, Wisconsin
Nancy Zieman Productions and Wisconsin Public Television
Retail Quilt Show

October 10-12, 2009 International Quilt Market, Houston, Texas
Open to wholesale trade only.

October 28-31, 2009 AQS-Des Moines, Des Moines, Iowa
American Quilter's Society
Retail Quilt Show

Elaine is thrilled and honored to design fabrics for Andover Fabrics. At the Barre
Fabrics, From the Attic Fabrics, A Capella Hearts Fabrics, and "Snow Day" Fabrics, all by Andover Fabrics, are some of the fabrics that Elaine has designed.

While I'll be writing more about Elaine's books & patterns, in the near future, I wanted to recommend that quilters, sewers, and shoppers, go visit her online store. I'm currently planning on making some Christmas gifts using Elaine's designs. Her Laurel's Travel Tote design is well written and easy to follow. I think this is going to help me make some very nice gifts.

Events you won't want to miss

As summer draws to a close, it is time to plan what classes you want to take this fall. It is also a time that I like to update my personal calendar with events that I don't want to miss. While my list may have an emphasis on Southern California activities, if you live out of the area I'd like to invite you to use this calendar to plan a trip to visit So. Cal. And, if you can't, I simply want to recommend you take time to look into what is going on in your area and be sure to mark your calendar accordingly. And share with others. Sadly, it is easy to overlook fun opportunities so I do appreciate hearing insights from others about fun events that I may want to go to.

Temecula Quilt Company

Sheryl Johnson is the owner of the Temecula Quilt Company, a lovely quilt shop located in Temecula, California.

They have beautiful fabrics and a nice selection of classes.

{And don't you just love the snapware storage unit, shown in the above photo!}.

The Fall/Winter Quilt Sampler Magazine has an article about this beautiful quilt, by Sheryl.

She'll also be selling kits for this quilt, with her charming fabrics. But order ASAP, as these kits will most likely sell out quickly. I think it is charming!

I have always enjoyed shopping at the Temecula Quilt Company. And while I had fun shopping there during the recent Southern California Quilt Run, I was delighted when I found out I won this fantastic gift basket from Temecula Quilt Company. Thank you Sheryl, I'll certainly have fun with all the goodies that are you added in this gift basket.

Desert Quilt Retreat

As participants at the Desert Quilt Retreat work on a "Mystery Quilt" project, I held off showing you photos of this fun retreat until all the August 2009 retreat sessions were completed.

This year's theme was "Paris". Several groups dressed in themed outfits and decorated their tables.

Ann Conn purchased cute fabric Eiffel towers and hosted sew-cials for our group (13) to make matching aprons and sewing machine mats. {Thank you Ann}.

There was sharing of past quilts.

Fabric kits were prepared by the quilt shops that organized this retreat, Monica's Quilt & Beads and The Calico House. Participants selected their kit and began following the mystery quilt instructions. Clues were given out on well written instructions, one sheet at a time.

And then we began to cut and create. I brought my Olfa Cutter and large Olfa Mat, which worked really great.

Several games were held during the retreat, at various times. There was "S-Car-Go" themed electric car race around the eiffel tower. An interesting game with a toilet plunger and toilet paper (you had to carry the toilet paper on the stick and drop it into a box). And, as tradition as this retreat goes, a Marshmallow Fight!

And it was fun to see completed quilts from the staff, who thoroughly test the pattern before the retreat.

One of which showed a quilt that was made up without using high contrast fabrics. You could really see how the design was lost.

I really enjoyed seeing the "mystery" of our beautiful quilts unfold. It was delightful to see other's progress on their quilt, using the same design, but different fabrics.

The finished quilt tops are so beautiful. I can hardly wait to see these tops quilted.

If you are interested in joining this fun at the Desert Quilt Retreat in 2010, please contact Monica's Quilt & Beads and The Calico House.
